Help! I'm losing focus...

Published

Hi everyone! I have taken the NCLEX three times all ready and I'm starting to get REAL irritated. I just can't seem to pass the damn thing. I took it for the 3rd time in June 2005 and got all 265 questions and failed. On the sheet you get after you fail I was "near passing standard" in ALL categories.

My problem RIGHT NOW is that I can't seem to focus on studying. I'm just starting to NOT care, but I want more than anything to be an RN. I tell myself everyday you didn't spend 4 years in college working your butt off for NOTHING. I want to PASS, I really really do. I'm just in a weird place right now and can't seem to get my studying together.

I have a 9.5 month old little girl and she is my world, along with my hubby of course. I'm currently a stay-at-home Mom and studying just isn't part of my day. I'm playing with her all day and when she naps I just can't seem to bring myself to study. I SHOULD use that time to because she usually naps anywhere from 2-4 hours in a day and that is plenty of study time. I could potentially be studying 10-20 hours a week and I'm not. Also, I'm going to be going back to my old job as a medical assistant in the next few weeks part-time (3 days a week, 4.5 hours a day) because we need the extra money since I haven't worked in almost a year.

Anyway, I'm just LOST right now and I need HELP. I want to be an RN, please don't get me wrong. I'm just a REALLY BAD study person and I always have been since the early days of school.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I need help. I MUST get into NCLEX mode and FAST. I want to take the exam before the end of the year!

Thanks!

I can understand your desperation and frustration.

But 3000 q is not enough!!!!!

You have to do at least 6000 questions. Difficult questions!

Well, then can someone suggest something other than Suanders because I did that whole book and the CD and I was doing great on all the questions. So obviously if that isn't helping me to pass, which it's obviously not I need some other book.

Any suggestions? I mean is there some kind of plan of something I should be doing. I want this 4th time to be my LAST!!!!!!

Also I'm always on AIM and Yahoo instant messenger so if anyone has those I would love to chat that way. My AIM name is JemsPrincess99 and my Yahoo name is bitchyprincess80

Thanks again for everyone's advice!

Don't give up! YOu were so gung ho last month! Try keeping it going. I used Lippincott mainly then Saunders. I would photocopy the Lippincott tests and then take them. I would write all my rationales right on the test and would review it later. That really helped. If you want I can send you the one I had. THere isn't one mark in the book since I copied all the tests. I didn't score very high on the tests because they are hard. The rationales are excellent. Better than Saunders! I think the highest I scored was 70% and that was on cardiac, only because that is my strong subject. Most of those exams I was in the 50 and 60's. Let me know I can mail it to you. I really want you to pass because you have done more than your fair share of studying. I reloaded my AOL but my computer is messed up and I'm using my husbands. I will try and chime in if I can get my puter to work.

Good luck and don't give up!!!!

Did you look over any of the articles that I sent to you? They are extremely beneficial and have made the difference in those that have passed and those that did not.

There are other articles as well, but you haven't been letting me know how you are doing on a weekly basis and let me know what you need help with.....

Suzanne - Yes I read both the articles you sent me on herbal medications and diaster planning/traige. THe problem with me is that I don't know what I need help with. I feel as though I have done everything right, but I get ZERO results. It's like all my hardwork and dedication is for NOTHING! Which is why I'm having issues now trying to start preparing for the NCLEX the 4th time. It's like why even bother, just go take it.

I don't mean to sound down or anything or like I don't care because I do. I wouldn't be here writing all this if I didn't want to succeed. I want to be an RN!!!

hi i talked to u before when i found out i failed my nclex rn the first time i read suzzanes articles, did questions on saunders, mosby CAT. and took the NCSBN course for 4 weeks......i think the saunders and thr ncsbn were what helped me passed.......i did about 5000 questions i would do sometimes up to 300 a day and believe me it was rough!!! im am a horrible study person and i live with my fiance and his family for the time being and it was sooooo hard to concentrate.....i had to buy a laptop and find the queitest place in the house and study the nscbn course and i used alot of earpplugs to drown out background noise........getting motivated is really hard the first time i had 265 too and was near passing on everything but one.....i was frustrated that i came sooooo close but what pushed me to study is that i knew i would be sooooo mad at myself if i didnt study and just take it and fail again knowing i had the oppurtunity to do everything in my power to pass......thats how i felt going in to it the 2nd time and honestly after the test i wasnt upset because i knew how hard i had worked and pass or fail there was nothing more i could have done ......i didnt want to look back and be like i should have done this.......i know it feels like i was soooo close i can take it again now and pass but if u just suck it up and study more than you ever have you'll have no regrets and im sure youll pass good luck :o)

I will try to do my best Nicole. I'm just trying to find the best way to study out there for me. I'm just so DAMN busy right now that I can't always find the time to even begin the study process. As it is I only usually get to the computer around 11pm and that is just to late to study, being tired from a long day isn't going to help me want to study. I just don't know. I MUST pass it because I didn't go to school for nothing and I know I can do it. It's just the study process that is tearing me up inside.

Brandi :)

PS. Thanks everyone for your help. I hope to get through this and start studying again by the beginning of next week.

PPS. If anyone else has more suggestions I'm OPEN TO ALL OF THEM!!!

So, what's your plan? Have you developed one?

Before you start you have to know exactly what you gonna do every day.

i always studied as soon as i woke up i got my breakfast sat down and study before anyone else woke up...i know its hard with a new baby but thats what i did

Leda sent me some study plans one is a three week plan and the other is a five week plan. It's all mapped out for me, what questions to do and so on. I'm taking a look at them and hopefully I will be able to use them. Keeping my fingers crossed!

That's great. What study materials are included in your plan ( saunders, mosby....)?

And are you going to use both of those study plans? How many questions total are you planning to do this time?

I really hope you pass it this time!

Studying is not fun. For the most part, people do not look forward to it. I am in a PhD program right now and there are days when the thought of opening a book and studying makes me feel sick. But, I have a study schedule, and I make myself do it. There are many things in life like that. Some people hate to exercise, or go to work. You have to make yourself do it. If you wait for the desire or mood to study to strike you, you may never get it done. Hopefully, your study plan will help.

Now, the other thing you mentioned, was getting out of the house to study. That is a good idea. You mentioned having difficulty concentrating, so breaking up study time into smaller increments may help, too. If you want to do 100 questions a day, break them up into smaller parts most days and then maybe once a week do a longer session (like marathon trainers do their runs!)
