HELP!! I need guidance I saw someone cheating

Nursing Students General Students

I need guidance, I saw one of my classmates cheating on our mid-term pharm test. We self grade so she changed about 12 answers to get a passing grade. NOT only did I see her but in the hall after grading she told me she had to change them just to barely pass. I got an 83% and passing is 78% so sure I wanted a better grade to but would never have changed my answers.

Ethicly I think I know what to do, I just don't want to be a tattle tail and she knows I know so there is my catch 22 .

I guess what I'm asking is what would you do?

I read your posts.

That's all I have to say about it.

If the class was English, History, etc...I would have said, yup...go to the instructor.

But for nursing school? Nope...as I have said several times already..problem takes care of itself.

That's like swating a fly that is getting ready to die...what's the point if the end result is the same????

Makes for great training for real-world nursing, I guess.

I'm confused..... what is the diffeance between nursing school and English, history etc.

As Nurses would it be ethical to look away if no one got hurt except for the nurse.........after dealing with this I don't think I could agree.

hmm hard call i agree anonymous e-mail and this suggestion to you lectuer.

not sure why you don't swop exams with a colleague to mark as i seen this used in every educatioanl esthablishment ive attended.

I think it would be hard to mark an exam you know you have done poorly in and not try to change things just too hard for some people.

Why not an anonymous note to the instructor?

By posting it she understands that it's the wrong thing to do.

However, we all know that majoring in nursing is not like majoring in basket weaving...just because you pass the classes doesn't mean you get the job.

Nursing school follows Darwin's theory to a T....only the strongest will survive.

It was a quiz, it wasn't an exam...do you really think that nursing school instructors are going to be stupid enough to allow students to grade all of their exams?

If the problem wouldn't easily take care of itself, I would say go report it.

But in this case it will.

Nowhere did the OP state that it was no big deal...so there is no "integrity" issue with the OP.

Completely disagree with the bolded part, I have met some stupid nurses, some completely clueless nurses and remember thinking to myself, How in the heck did they pass boards to become a nurse. If the bolded part were true you would not have a gazillion page threads up in the general nursing area venting about useless co workers, lazy nurses, dangerous nurses and so on. The profession is far from flawless.

Someone can cheat through out nursing school to maybe get better grades and then do a million Nclex review things and barely pass. Nclex tests you on knowing the minimum knowledge needed to pass.

Drop an anonymous note to the instructors about it. You could name her specifically, or you could say there are student(s) who are/may be cheating during the self-grading.

I'm sure she's not the only one cheating...and I bet there are other students besides yourself who are aware of what's going on.

The right thing to do would be to bring it to your instructors attention that you saw some people changing their answers on the test, but don't give any names. Just let her/him know that you wanted them to be aware of this because you work very hard and come prepared for a test and it's not fair that other people are changing their grade. I wouldn't even go to the instructor about this truthfully. I would go to the chair of the department.

In the real world you would report another nurse for making a mistake, because it's law, so I think it's only the right thing to do and bring it to the nursing departments attention that this way of "self grading" isn't working.

Please don't do anything, it will come back to haunt you!

It will come back on her, she can only get so far with that!!!

Keep up your hard work!

Anonymous is a great plan!

Also, who let's someone check their own work? That is crazy. It would be tempting for most to change their answer, that is human nature.

I don't think human nature dictates most people would cheat if they could. Some maybe, most? I don't think so.

What if each person that catches this student cheating chooses to look the other way and not get involved? What if she does pass and ends up taking care of patients and makes a major medical error because she doesn't understand drugs, dosages etc? Would we feel obligated then to report? Cheating is wrong and it is our obligation to uphold the integrity of our own programs. Ask to speak to your instructor in confidence and report the violation.
