Help dismissed from RNprogram

Nursing Students General Students

I'm about to get dismissed from my program because I'm not going to get 75% exam average. I'm going to pass the class in general. I took this class before but did not complete it because my father was dying and I wanted to be with him till he passed away. I'm told that I can not take the class more than twice. I'm trying to think of a loophole or anything so that I can continue. I'm even thinking about saying it's my ptosis that is hindering my stuyding(which it does by afftecting my vision, I'm having surgery on the 18 to correct it). Any ideas that might help my situation would be great.

I'm sorry for the loss of your father. I understand your choice to drop the class at that time, but believe you need to accept responsibility for your performance this time around.

Your post indicates that you are looking for a "loophole" to excuse your current academic insufficiency. I don't support that approach. While I understand that your vision may be affected by ptosis, if you truly believed that to be a hinderance to academic performance, you were obligated to inform your program director of that at the beginning of the term. If you had identified that as a problem prior to failing, you might have been able to work out accomodations. That you didn't do so screams that it is not true cause of your academic problem, and your program director will see right thru that as the excuse that it is.

I believe that your best bet is to go to your instructors and advisors and plead for assistance. Identify the ways in which you have attempted to improve your academic peformance. ID your strengths and weaknesses. Ask for assistance in formulating a plan to improve your grades. If they are willing to work with you, you must keep up your end of the deal. Attend every tutoring session. Turn in every assignment. Re-work every assignment on which you score less than 100%.

There is no substitute for hard work, and you can't reasonably expect your program to do more for you than you are willing to do for yourself. Would you be happy to learn that they have found a "loophole" by which to dismiss you, even if you bring your grades up? I didn't think so.

What school do you go to so I can send them a link to this thread?

I know the loophole thing looks bad but i just want this so bad, this class was a tough one, I have one exam left with the final and i'm going to do both has if they aren't going to dissmiss me because i'll have to find another school. I just needed some sound advice because i'm so stressed out. Thanks for the replies.

Instead of looking for a loophole after the fact, you should have gone all out prior to failing. Do your best to relax, and do your best to the end, so you can at least say that you gave it an honest effort.

I acutally really tried, I even gave up call at work, asked for some days off, in talking to other students, they gave me some help in how to study, I guess i'll find out how affective it will be with exam 4 and the final.

It certainly would be great if you could pull out two high A's. Relax and go for it.

haha

But really, to the OP...no matter how bad some people want things, you can't always get it. And the fact that you want to find a "loophole", not good. As they said, if you knew your vision was hindering your reading, and was a TRUE cause to why you failed..why not disclose that to the teacher before now? Also how is it that your vision is causing you to fail this class, but no others???

I really should not have used "loophole" to discribe how to stay into the program. My right eye, after 10 to 15 minutes becomes blurry, so i'm reading, driving, doing everything with one eye, I have to close my eye and rest it so that I can see, it's gotten progressively worst, so bad that i'm going to have surgery to correct it, and doctor says that it might help with the burry vision.

I'm going to be blunt and say this but you should stop making excuses for why you are failing. If your ptosis was such a problem, this should have been brought up, say, at the beginning of the semester. My friend was in this exact situation last semester. For some reason, she thought it was okay to work full time during the week, with a class load that was challening for her. She started panicking when the last two tests approached. Needless to say, she failed. I was the unfortunate person to have to hear all the excuses of why she was failing. My advice to you is try your best. If you don't make the grade, transfer to another school, study hard, and learn from your past mistakes.

study harder...oh wait nevermind.

Why is it that everyone in danger of failing a class seeks to use a "loophole" or "the balme game" when YOUR GRADES are YOUR responsibility. You know, I got a 90 on an exam once, and I have ulcerative colitis. I think I'll use that as an excuse as to not doing better. maybe if I see the teacher, she'll boost my grade because of this....or once I took an exam on a rainy day, and rainy days give me "brain freeze"--maybe I could get some more points added to my exam because of that. Your post, olliefos, describes LIFE. Stuff happens that is beyond your control. For every 1 nursing student that I've seen take (gasp!) PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for their academic work, I can give you 50, that will blame anyone and anything if they're not happy with a grade received. How about putting the cell phone, focus on studying, and kwitcerbitchin'.
