Help dismissed from RNprogram

Published

I'm about to get dismissed from my program because I'm not going to get 75% exam average. I'm going to pass the class in general. I took this class before but did not complete it because my father was dying and I wanted to be with him till he passed away. I'm told that I can not take the class more than twice. I'm trying to think of a loophole or anything so that I can continue. I'm even thinking about saying it's my ptosis that is hindering my stuyding(which it does by afftecting my vision, I'm having surgery on the 18 to correct it). Any ideas that might help my situation would be great.

I am really sorry to hear about your dad. My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family.

There are no loopholes when you are faced with a nclex exam or you are holding someone's life in your hand. You may be in over your head. See how you do and transfer to another school if you have to.

Nursing is a profession built on personal integrity and ethics.

What you are suggesting doing and saying negates this.

It sounds like you are saying that there is not way that you can pass with a 75. That means that you had to get a 60 or less on the past three tests. I think the time to be concerned and ask for help would have been after the first or second test. Did you go to a tutor? Ask your instructor for help? Join a study group?

In my school, whether a student is dismissed depends on what steps they have taken to try not to fail. These include going to tutoring, using a student mentor, and asking the instructor for extra help. Maybe if you started doing some of these things and got A's on the next two tests, your program would be more forgiving. It might be too little too late, though.

You might have grounds to appeal the dismissal based on the fact that you withdrew from the class the first time. Did you withdraw passing or withdraw failing? That could make a big difference. The best advice I can offer you is to do everything you can to do great on the last two tests. If you still get dismissed, think about whether nursing is really something you want to pursue. If it is, learn some good study skills and try again at another school.

Also how is it that your vision is causing you to fail this class, but no others???

I agree! But I do understand that some classes are harder than others! I didn't meet my 73% test average in Patho last semester and was absolutely devastated when they told me that I had to sit out of the clinical courses for a year even though I get to stay in non-clinical courses. But I didn't blame that misstep on anything else! I accepted the fact that I didn't study hard enough and didn't focus hard enough! Don't look for "loopholes"! Would you want a nurse taking care of you that had looked for a "loophole" when he or she realized that they were on the verge of failing a class? I know I wouldn't! Sad to say that you remind me of a girl in my class who actually admitted that she would rather cover up a nursing error instead of reporting it to her supervisor and face the consequences! I hope you can pick things up and pass and realize that in nursing school you can't just look for the loopholes to pass classes! You have to work hard to earn your grades otherwise you will look like a fool once you are in the clinical setting after graduation someday!
