No blood transfusion r/t high WBC??
Are they undergoing induction therapy? Are they eligible for a transplant? The more blood and blood products they receive, the more likely they are to develop antibodies. These patients have so much going on all at once it is hard to tell.

want to be an oncology nurse
Be prepared to do some study on your own. The Oncology Nursing Society has an excellent website with many resources regarding the latest treatments. You don't have to be a member to look at it.

Help dismissed from RNprogram
There are no loopholes when you are faced with a nclex exam or you are holding someone's life in your hand. You may be in over your head. See how you do and transfer to another school if you have to.

ONC CERTIFICATION
I took it twice and passed on the second try. Oncology Nursing by Otto was a good resource. Be very careful and read the rules about taking the test. ONCC is very strict about candidates asking others who have tested about test content. They consider this to be a form of cheating and this won't be tolerated. Good luck and keep trying. It is a very tough exam to pass.

Old Nursing Journals
Look at the website Ruby Lane under nursing pins. They have a few from the late 40's and early 50's for purchase.

Malpractice Insurance
Small price to pay for peace of mind. Don't make a big deal to your employer about having a policy. It is none of their business. Keep the policy's existence to yourself. In a year the price will go up to about 90-100 dollars for a year. You pay in advance for a year's worth of coverage. Meanwhile, learn to follow policy and procedure and document, document, document. Best Wishes in your new career.

Drawing blood from a PICC line
Don't pull back too hard, take it easy. You will collapse the line. I compare it to backing a car out of a driveway with a house on one side and the neighbor's car on the other. Just ease the blood out of there and don't get into a hurry.

Nurses not doing assessments
I work with a filipino nurse at night who is excellent. She does a head to toe assessment, turns on the lights, wakes them up, looks at every orfice, rolls them over.... etc. She doesn't care if they just got to sleep. She is an excellent nurse and fun to work with. Especially if you have to explain American slang to her.

Pick up Malpractice! They went after my license.
Having insurance isn't discoverable. You can't be sued for more just because you have insurance. You can't count on your employer to cover your a**. They will hang it out to dry instead. You should always follow policy and procedures, document everything, and carry your own policy. It costs less than 100 dollars a year. That is a small price to pay compared to losing your house and everything you own.

Worst visitors ever
I admitted an alzheimers patient the other night that was already wearing several layers of clothing. I sent her into the bathroom to change and she came out wearing a laundry bag as a pair of pants over everything else. How she didn't fall I'll never know. I thought her daughters were going to bust a gut laughing.

Malpracitice Insurance
It costs about 100.00 a year. To me it is a struggle to pay every year, but well worth the cost. I was told in nursing school that if you carry a policy and you are sued, this isn't "discoverable." You can't be sued for more money just because you "have a policy." We try as hard as we can to be safe and follow policy and procedure at work. You never know when a situation may "blow up in your face." I'm not so sure when all is said and done that my employer would back me up. Employers have been known to leave nurses holding the bag in many situations. I feel better carrying a policy just in case.

Nursing repayment plan for student loans ......???????
The nursing loan repayment program is at the HRSA web site. I applied last year and didn't get it. It is very competitive and takes a lot of paperwork and a web application to apply. The deadline is this Friday with no exceptions.
