Thought for sure I would see an uproar about this restaurant in Az featured on ACB's 20/20. The waitresses wear slutty Media-type 'nurses' outfits and roll their bloated patrons to their car in a w/c after they gorge themselves on unhealthy foods. It was featured on 20/20s Gimme a Break last pm. John Stossel says Gimme a Break about nurses being upset over the image. IMO the person who was defending the "real nurses" did a very poor job.
Anyone else see it??
Hey there EmerNurse!
That post, err list, was funny - well, it would have even been more so - IF the "rules in the list" were not so ACCURATE for nursing. I imagine that the restaurant would CLOSE if subjected to the conditions that nursing must work within every day!
I (luckily) remain committed to my "TV Time Out" - thanks for reminding me to keep "perspective".
TO ALL - Have a SAFE and Blessed Holiday Season!
Personally, I would not eat at this resturaunt for the same reasons I don't eat at hooters, or any other resturaunts that exploit women. That's the real issue at hand.
IMO, they can dress up as naughty nurses, naughty police women, naughty school teachers...it doesn't matter. This resturaunt is not out to make nurses look like unprofessional and unknowledgeable sex objects, it is out to make WOMEN look that way.
"But nurse is a protected title and anyone calling themselves a nurse is breaking the law!" So if my child wants to dress up like a nurse on halloween its illegal? Actors pretending to be nurses on tv? There is a line that must be drawn with common sense...anyone who portrays themselves as a nurse, which I hope you would all agree takes more than a uniform (especially a slinky one!), and falsely practices nursing without a license (passes meds, does assessments, invasive procedures, etc) then that is breaking the law.
The BON should not have gotten involved with this issue...what a trivial matter to get involved in! How about nurse patient-ratios/wages, etc as another person mentioned? The fact that our boards who are supposed to be rallying for better working conditions, yet waste their time bickering over a crappy resturaunt whose waitresses wear SPOOF NURSE COSTUMES does more to hurt the nursing image than the resturaunt does. Does that make sense to anyone?
Sure, one result of our campaign may have been that the grill owner has had an increase in business. But our intended goal of getting people to think and talk about negative nursing images has been achieved. We cannot change the way people think and behave unless we first tell them this negativity is damaging and we ask them to stop. And just because the grill owner hasn't stopped yet, that doesn't mean the campaign has had zero effect. We have managed to educate millions of people about these damaging images, and hopefully the ones in the middle will just stop a minute and think.
Sandy,
You are on record as saying "move these fantasies to other professions."
What other professions would you like those fantasies moved to?
Don't get me wrong, I agree with your position as it relates to the professional image of nursing. I just think you might be undermining your efforts if you propose that sexual fantasies be applied to other professions that are equally important to society.

First of all, the article wrongly quoted me as saying "Move these sexual fantasies to other professions".
I did not, and would not say that and I have written to the journalist to ask her to fix it. But there's only so much I can do to make that happen. What I did say to her was: "There are an unlimited number of sexual fantasies you can have, and we urge people to fantasize about someone else."

OK, glad you clarified that. Too bad they misquoted you, that's just bad journalism. Good luck trying to get them to print a correction.
i'm happy that we live in society where people have freedom of speech. what REALLY harms the image of nurses are the crazy control freak nurses who are such utterly pompous asses that they believe they can censor society.
the owners and employees of this restaurant are within their rights. the power trippers who whine about things such as this are only making us all look like control freaking idiots.
hey, and those chicks are hot!

Makes perfect sense.
