Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Going heavy on tomatoes would give me heartburn! rofl!

Cool. Which plan are you on? I did "Glycemic Impact" and that's the one my mother is on.

I noticed to that sometimes I had to change the menu (but not all plans have that option). Because some days seemed heavy on the tomatoes, the next day was heavy on the cottage cheese, etc. I think it's a random computerized menu and doesn't realize how boring it can be. It seriously helped me to learn how much to eat to loose wait, and what a poortion is.

Good luck!

I am just on the regular ediets plan. I went to change my plan option because I thought you could change tot the south beach plan but I can't. The plan I am on now seems kind of bland for my tastes. Maybe I will check into the glycemic one. Is that one easy to cook for a family or is it too cooky (If you know what I mean).

EDITED TO ADD: I just switched to the glycemic plan. It seems a lot like the south beach plan so I think I will be happier :)

They don't have a version of South Beach, but this is pretty similar. There is an option where you can up the # of portions so you can cook for a family. I found the recipes good and very simple to make. Good luck.

I noticed another South Beach Cookbook in the stores last night.

I'm having a free day today. Usually I would work out, but I've too much to do, plus I'm tired from getting up real early today, so I'm going to take a nap.

Yesterday I went to yoga. :)

Hi everybody! Hope y'all had a happy weekend. We ran out of propane on Friday and our propane guy was gone to the state basketball games (he was supposed to check it 3 days before :angryfire but 'forgot' - go figure) so we had to pack up the kids and go spend the night at my MIL's. Oh well - that was a nice break anyway. Aside from that, the weekend was pretty peaceful. Yesterday I went grocery shopping and when I left the house I had on jeans, a t-shirt and sandals, when I came back it was snowing - that's Colorado for 'ya. :p

What does healthy living mean to me? I guess it is a wholistic thing to me, I want to have a strong body and a strong mind. It means eating healthier foods and keeping my heart in good shape. It means purging my stresses to keep myself calm rather than frazzled. It means keeping up with my kids and smiling more than frowning. It means accepting myself and working on improvements without feeling bad. :)

I haven't been very healthy the last couple of days. Been busy with other stuff, I know that's an excuse. I'm off for a few days rest with friends in Miami. I thoroughly believe in vacations. I have to write a paper on Friday though. :(

Hi guys... been a bit absent lately. But still working on my healthier living. Scale was creeping up lately, don't know why. Was back down a little today though.

I've started a different workout DVD. It was something I bought last year in my one infomercial-influenced purchase. I'm not sure it was worth the amount of money I paid for it, but I do like it... it came with a ten-week schedule to follow, which I find really helpful. Last week it was five days of exercise, two just doing the abs section of the "basic" workout, three doing the full basic workout. This week it's four days of the basic workout and one of the advanced. It builds up intensity over the ten weeks. Of course I'm not sure what one does after that! But at least it gives me a goal for the next few weeks.

Also went skiing on Sunday. I hadn't gone in over five years and it was only the fourth time ever, but I enjoyed it for the most part. Did find myself getting tired after a couple hours and once I got tired I started falling a lot more. But I did enjoy it up until that point! We're supposed to go up to Maine for a couple days of skiing in a couple weeks, so I'm hoping that my workouts will help me build some more strength so I can do more then. I'll also take a lesson, which should help. My FH used to teach skiing, but he taught 4-6 year olds, so can't quite use the same techniques with me (I'm sorry, but I will NOT quack like a duck and flap my "wings" while going down the slopes). Plus it's just a little hairy to have someone that close to you do the teaching... better to have a stranger.

So that's what's up with me! Hope everyone else is doing well in their pursuits!

Good for you! You are doing what I am doing with the exercise, building up. It is the only way I can get going on exercise. I set up my own eight week plan because I have a treadmill, eliptical and a bow flex. Each week I either go longer or add a new piece of equipment. This week I am 15 minutes on the treadmill and 5 minutes on the eliptical. I find that if I take baby steps it is not so daunting.

That sounds like a great plan, rn_in_3! You are so right that it less daunting (and less exhausting) to build up that to try to do it all at once. I have to admit that during last week on the "abs only" days I felt like I should be doing more, but then remembered that it's not worth it to exhaust myself so that I'M not able to function the next day! Plus I think by building up you're better able to make it a habit. Otherwise you just think, "eh, this is too hard, fugghedit!"

Good morning everybody. I am so glad y'all are working some exercise into your routines, that is great! I am such a slug when it comes to exercise. Thankfully though, summer is coming which should get me a bit more motivated - WooHoo!!!

I finally lost the 5 lbs. that I gained last week - so yeay! I'm going to get my hair cut today. I have never had it super-short before (it is shoulder-length now and that is the shortest I have ever had), so I'm going to try that. I am all excited - my hairdresser is freaking out though - LOL!

Happy Thursday everybody! :)

Glad to hear you guys are working out. Maybe you'll motivate me to go to the gym while I'm here. There's a gym attached to the hotel and we can go for free I think. But I may just take some time off and relax. I'm on vacation, which is very important part of my "wellness".

I did go to a mediation workshop today. I've done it in the past, and it's quite helpful. Anyone meditate? I would like to incorporate it into my life a little more.

Keep up the good work. (I needed to log on to my class, which is why I'm on the internet while on vacation. :))
