Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Hiya everybody. Sheesh. So much for checking in every day. I signed up with WW with a buddy of mine yesterday. I think it will give me the structure and accountability I need.

I'm about to have a very late breakfast, oatmeal with blueberries and milk. I just wasn't hungry earlier.

Did my yoga video this morning. actually I have been almost every morning. I like it. It's short and it's made for beginners. And Rodney Yee is cute.:D

Way to go! We are rooting for you :balloons:

Cheerful - good like with the search for a good diet. It is so hard to find something that works, but once you do, you feel like you won the lottery!!!

Jess, that is wonderful about your friend - you are right, nothing like that for good inspiration to yourself.

Kat - I think WW is wonderful! I have never been on it myself, but know people who have and have sworn by it. Good luck! BTW - I adore your avatar!!!

Good morning Teety, Deb & everybody else!

Morning everyone! :) I ate leftovers for breakfast. Wasn't hungry for anything really since I'm not a big fan of eating before eleven o'clock in the morning anyway. :uhoh21: Bad I know...I'm working on that bad habit.

We had a pasta bake for dinner last night, and there was just enough left to make a nice breakfast meal, so I ate it in spite of feeling sick at the stomach before eating it. I have been on thyroid medication for about seven months now, and I'm not sure if that's what makes me slightly nauseaus in the mornings or exactly what is the guilty culprit.

DD brought the treadmill in the house from the garage so I can use it more often. The garage smelled too much like gasoline, and that gave me a headache. OHHHHHHHHHHH what I'd give NOT to have aches, pains, sore muscles, nausea, allergies, bad eyes, arms that hurt, and a bad back. :crying2: :crying2: :crying2: The only CURE is to die and go to heaven to get me a new body! :rotfl:

BBL! Eat and be healthy! Take a stroll around the block! Read and exercise the mind! Laugh and laugh and laugh...it's great medicine! :chuckle :kiss

I went out to eat today for the first time since starting my diet. It went well, I had curried beef and was able to box up half to take home. Prior to the diet I would have eaten the whole thing.

I did a full workout with weights and 40 minutes of aeobics at they gym tonight.

Chicken for supper tonight.

Kat, glad to hear you signed up with WW and did yoga. Good luck to you.

Best wishes to you guys.

I did really well while in So. Cal . . . not to mention that we were served a 10 course homemade Vietnamese meal. Lots and lots of veggies and shrimp and pork. So very good.

However, since being back I've not been so good but at least not eating the same amounts of food. We had chinese last night and I only ate about 1/4 of the usual amount.

I am down about 5 pounds.

Just gotta get the exercise bug somehow.

Checking back in... it's been a few days. Holding fairly stable here, but haven't been doing a whole heck of a lot. Did pop in a workout DVD last night and I'm sure feeling it. Reminds me exactly how much I need to get back into shape. I don't like feeling like a weakling!

Jess, I remember one time when I was in college we had a dance troupe give a master class for my dance class and they did a lot of Pilates as part of their training. I have never seen more muscular, yet slim people in my life. They were incredible.

Kat, a new yoga place just opened down the street from me which also offers Pilates and a few other things, but unfortunately their latest weekday classes start at 6 which is before I get home, and I'll be taking micro on Saturdays so won't be able to go to those classes. Grr... it would have been fun. I like tapes, but I find live classes motivate me a lot more.

Tweety, great job on the portion control!

Steph, congrats on the 5 lbs!

To everyone else, hello and hope all are doing well in their healthier living pursuits!

Thanks! :) I'm going to research the Rice Diet more, then wait and see if my dd#3 continues losing on it over the next two weeks. Then, if I like what I read, hear, see.........I'll give it a whirl. However, I am done with those starvation diets. Been through the mill with diets in my adult life. :uhoh3: Lose weight...stop diet...gain weight back plus some......and the cycle of dieting continued...always with the same results.....diet...lose...look good for awhile...gain it all back and some. :rotfl:

Gotta focus more on eating healthy foods. I do NOT buy foods that have "low fat, low sugar, sugarless, low carb, or diet" written on the package. I figure if something in food must be removed to make it "low in something"...something had to be added to the food in its place. Question is.......what is added in it's place???? :rotfl:

Well...I have my divorce recovery class tonight. The topic for discussion is "Re-entering the dating scene". :D That topic ought to be goooooood! :rotfl:

Renee, I'm not anti-Rice Diet by any stretch, but that is a starvation diet I'm afraid. When I lived in Chapel Hill I worked with a girl (at Wendy's, this was when I was 18, imagine working at Wendy's being a Rice Diet patient), but things might have changed. That's why it is MD controlled, because it is so ultra-low in calories. She was morbidly obese and needed that. But if you're working out like you are, I think you're going to starve on that.

If you're looking for a diet full of veggies, try http://www.drmcdougall.com/

It's the complete opposite of Atkins.

Thanks Tweety. I believe you, and will research with caution. Thanks for that link, too. I'll check it out. I love mostly veggies and fruit. The only meats I'm crazy about are fish, seafood, poultry.:)

Well As I had written before I thought that I was taking Yoga this semester but I just found out that I got a spot in the CNA program, so I had to drop the yoga. I hope that I can take it this summer.

Princess74, mixed news, I guess. Great that you got into the CNA program, too bad you had to drop the yoga. Can you sign up for a yoga class outside of school? Or maybe pick up some videos/DVDs to do at home (though I think when learning a new exercise it's good to have an instructor so s/he can correct anything which might cause you harm). I know my library has a few workout videos in the reference section (with the health books, etc.). Good luck with the CNA class! I'd like to do one of those, but they seem to be mostly private around here, thus $$$!

Have fun in the CNA class Michelle - I would love to take one myself, but I don't think I'll have the time or finances either. :( Oh well . . . I will keep my spirits up until I can get into nursing class - then it will be a huge internal party!!! I got my microbiology kit and textbook the other day and it looks like so much fun - I am excited! That is definitely good for my mental health - I can't wait for classes to start!!! :) I know that's not a physical health topic, but it does 'get me going' mentally - yeay!
