HCC ADN Fall 2008 Applicants

Published

Anyone applying to Houston Community College for the fall? I signed up today for the HESI. I am scheduled to take it on 3/29. If I do well, they will place me into the summer pharmacology course. I am a little nervous. I would love to hear from any students that are in the program. Any tips on the HESI & the Pharm. class would be helpful! The thought of it... ahhh it boggles my mind! LOL

Thanks!

Yeah well they could have taken off I dont know, maybe on wednesday or something!! jk LOL, Seriously, they need to get our letters out!! Some people have alot to get in order before the orientation and the actual program itself. I am also trying to order/pruchase books ASAP since I have found them for less $ online.

I like to know what I am doing tomorrow :) I understand that HCC is like this and KNOWN to be unorganized... but I cant help it. hahah anyone understand me? ;)

Sorry to say but I suggest you get use to this disorganization and lateness of info. This is how they pretty much run, I'm not sure if it's on purpose or what... Wait until they tell you the same week or the day before something and you have try and take off or find a babysitter. I'm glad it's over for me at HCC!! Thank you Jesus!!! Good Luck everyone!!!

I got both of the books direct from the publisher Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (http://www.lww.com) and used promotion code "WXP2706D" (sans quotes) when checking out for a 20% discount.

The textbook that you need is located here:

http://www.lww.com/product/?978-0-7817-8157-2

The HCC Bookstore (aka Barnes and Noble) sell the same exact book for $235.00 new.

I got it for $80. That's a 65% savings.

The same publisher also sells the medical dictionary, but the savings isn't near as much (about $10), but you can order them both at the same time and get free shipping and use the coupon code on the entire order.

The medical dictionary is located here:

Big savings!!!

Yes I know.. my gf is in the program. She suggested for me not to work. So that is what I plan on doing. I will be very flexible... bc like I said before, they are KNOWN to be unorganized!

i thought hcc had a bookstore in main street, called majors? I think?

either way, online is the way to go, you'll find it cheaper like on half.com, ebay, amazon marketplace, etc. Barnes and noble doesn't have any discounts from what I saw.

Buying from Barnes and Noble is like buying from a convenience store. Overpriced, but useful if you are disorganized. In fact, I was once able to get a book from my local B&N and it was cheaper than if I had got it from my campus B&N. Shocking!!

Justin thanks for the tip about buying direct from the publisher. I might try it out rather than the usual Amazon.

I hope that we all get letters in the mail tomorrow, though after reading through these posts I'm starting to think I'll be lucky to see anything in the mail before the weekend...

FYI, the letter I have states that orientation will be on 8/19/04 from 8am until 4pm in the first floor Auditorium. Criminal Background check, physical exam, immunizations (Hep B, Tetorifice, Measles, Mumps, and Chickenpox), TB skin test and CPR be completed and turned in by 8/25/08.

They are also requesting you bring $39.00 cash for the background test and approximately $120 to order and pay for student uniforms. They are offering a uniform package with 2 tops, 2 pants, 1 lab coat, 3 emblems and photo ID for $112.25 + tax (XS-XL sizes).

I just wanted to give you guys a heads up!

Ah, my reaction to this really shows me how desperate for knowledge I am about the next steps!!

I have some rubbish international student health insurance, so I'm wondering if anyone has any advice as to where to get all this done? My medical records are all in New Zealand so I'm going to need titers. I was thinking about going to one of those memorial hermann neighborhood clinics. I got my Hep B titer there and although it was expensive, at least I didn't have to pay for a consultation with a Dr.

I am reading online that the Varicella vaccine is not required, you just note on the paperwork that you had the illness and at what age. I'm also reading that tetorifice is not required, but that if you receive a puncture wound while working in clinicals, you will be required to be immunized.

At least this is how Alvin CC does things...we'll see how anal HCC is.

I think the whole Varicella/Chickenpox business is so silly though.

You must have had the Tetorifice-diptheria in the last 10 years.

Titers are acceptable for all of the immunizations. Documentation of having the condition of chicken pox by your doctor is also acceptable.

My pediatrician is retired! Jesus Christ!

My pediatrician is retired! Jesus Christ!

DON'T worry! lol, My pediatrician is still around but they called me last week just to tell me that they dont see my shot records in their files. IT TOOK THEM 2 WEEKS TO FIND THAT OUT.

So i have to get them all done as well! ughhh
