HCC ADN Fall 2008 Applicants

Published

Anyone applying to Houston Community College for the fall? I signed up today for the HESI. I am scheduled to take it on 3/29. If I do well, they will place me into the summer pharmacology course. I am a little nervous. I would love to hear from any students that are in the program. Any tips on the HESI & the Pharm. class would be helpful! The thought of it... ahhh it boggles my mind! LOL

Thanks!

Have yall been on Webct.....Ms. Grant saying if you don't receive a letter to call Mary. Do you think that means we are in...or is that posted on everyones no matter what

Melissa, you're instructed to call in case your letter didn't arrive on time or got lost in the mail. They want to make sure everyone that is deserving gets in. Apparently, the pass rate for Pharmacology was pretty low. They've already sent out 50 letters for the students who took the class in the spring, of those 50, I think about 10 have already informed the ADN department that they are opting out (i.e., they don't have their HepB done, decided to go to another school, etc.). That leaves about 40 left. There are a total of 180 spots, 140 of which will go to students from this summer's Pharmacology group. Ms. Smith stated that for the past 5 or so years they have been able to admit everyone who has all prerequisites and academic courses completed and has everything else together. Ms. Grant said that EVEN if they do start to run out of spots, those with A's in Pharmacology will be admitted first, B's second, and so on. I'm assuming there are a lot of B's and C's, so if you've got an A you're pretty much guaranteed a spot.

yeah... well I dont have an elective out of the way. So that scares me! :(

txgrl, Ms. Reyes stated during one of her lectures to our class that when she was in the ADN program at HCC a lot of her fellow classmates put off taking Lifespan (PSYC 2314) until after they were in the program, so I'm sure that won't be a huge issue. There are SO many things working in favor of everyone who has their act together.

  • A lot of people failed Pharmacology
  • A lot of people didn't score 90%+ on the math exam
  • A lot of people BARELY passed Pharmacology with a low C, so if you have an A or a B, you've already got an edge
  • A lot of people won't have their HepB, CPR, TB, etc. completed or will opt out of going to HCC (remember that 10 out of 50 already did, continue that average and you've got 30-35 people alone opting out, not to mention those that haven't or won't notify the ADN office that they won't be acting on their acceptance letter

I'm not worried. I've never heard of anyone not getting accepted so long as they are on top of everything. Those that don't get accepted are those with a 74.5 in Pharmacology or that don't have any academics completed.

Thanks Justin! That means all of us here will get accepted bc we all passed! I do know that the saturday class didnt have a high drop rate, BUT I am not sure how many actually did pass. There was still about 70 of us left on saturday. After the final I saw 2 people crying bc they couldnt retest for the Math...then one girl got a 72 and it was her 2nd time taking the course.

A lot of people did not drop because the drop date was BEFORE the second test.

I'm sure a lot of people didn't want to drop after the first test because they thought they still had time to turn everything around.

This basically puts a lot of students in a lose/lose situation, so I'm sure most of them made the choice to stick with it, even though they were doing poorly.

I'm sure a lot of people also thought that since they were past the drop date AFTER they failed the second test, they might as well continue to go to class to see if they could pick up any information that might help them next semester or to see if by a miracle they could've pulled a C.

I'm sure the pass/fail rate is about on par with most other classes. To elaborate, most of the other classes that I have taken at HCC have a TON of people dropping/failing.

The class average for the first test was in the low 70s, if that tells you anything.

Not to mention, there were a TON of students in my class that would ask ridiculous questions during lectures which led me to believe their understanding of even the BASICS of what was being covered was poor at best.

Also, I would think that the Saturday class would have a lower drop rate because they had Grant 100% of the time, who basically outlines what you need to know in black and white. No gray.

I can't say the same for all of the other instructors, many of which included test questions that were never in their notes, and some of Reye's questions weren't even in the text (i.e, questions about cromolyn a mast cell stabilizer). I won't go into which instructors I feel were better than others, but a lot of them did include a lot of unnecessary background, and I'm sure a lot of students focused on that information for their studies (which was not focused on during tests).

I'm not complaining about the professors, because I think most of them did an excellent job, but a lot of students do not know how to study. By that I mean they study in an incorrect manner that is not conducive to excelling or they study material that is unnecessary or irrelevant (i.e., dosage forms, onset of action, etc.).

Ms. Grant took the guesswork out of the class by outlining exactly what was going to be asked of the student. (In fact, I used her notes as a good guide, and it helped a lot!) So I'm sure those students that were in the Saturday class did much better because they were being TOLD exactly what to study.

Hello Everyone!! Congrats on picking nursing and getting accepted to HCC!! I recently graduated from HCC (actually last week). All I can say is study and know your stuff, cramming never works. Ask questions and more questions. It will go by fast believe me. Try and do well on all your test but especially the first exam, you do not want to be struggling during finals that is the worst thing ever. Pharm will follow you through out the program so keep all your stuff so you can refer back if needed. I would recommend doing Nclex questions throughout the program based on the class you are taking this will help you in the class and in the future. I hope this helps. :anpom:

Oh, in case anyone didn't know, the orientation that is on August 19 @ 8am lasts until 2 PM so make sure to set aside most of your day!

One of my gals went up to the ADN office... both Ms. Mary Clark & Hermoinne Sullivan (or whatever the chairman/directors name is) were both out of the office today. Whoever was up there covering the desk told my gf that there was no activity today. So that really makes me wonder... seriously come on. ughhh

Mrs. Wilhelmina Rich is the acting department chair for the program and she is out this week. Mrs. Clark is the office head secretary she mostly can answer all your questions. Mrs. Hermoine Sullivan is an instructor for Pharm online and a great clinical instructor (consider yourself blessed if you get her). Alot of people are probably on vacation due to the fact we just finished a semester and to get some rest before the next semester starts. Try calling before you go up there and leave Mrs. Clark a message it really conserves gas that way. She will call you back when she gets a chance, remember you are not the only one that is in the program or trying to get in. Have a great summer b/c once school starts there is no turning back and your life as you know it may very well be over until you graduate.

lol...thats why no one was answering the phones today. Gosh!!!

Given that fall semester starts in just a few weeks, it doesn't make much sense for people to start putting in vacation time. I find it pretty irritating that they're going to give us just a few days notice to be prepared to start attending classes.

Some of us have to make arrangements for things like work schedules, transportation, child care, etc. (not that I have all of these to worry about, but some do).

It's pretty hard to change all of these around with just a few days notice.

I wish they would get the paperwork out ASAP. It just seems really unorganized an illogical they way they run things.
