Have you heard of this type of grading before?

Nursing Students General Students

So I just found out last cohort 10 people were dismissed from the nursing program ......turns out that in this program they don’t drop you as you go along they wait until the very bitter end (graduation) to tell you that you actually failed the program and can not continue . Is this normal for nursing programs ? Why not stop and talk to a student and give them a heads up ? Why the surprise ? And why 9 students ? Now I’m really worried

At the university I went to, you either pass or fail each class. If you fail a class, you will need to repeat the class. If you fail two classes, you are dismissed. You can appeal the dismissal if you have a valid reason for failing the class.

This is pretty standard I think..

OP - did you guys not see your grades at all during the program?  Did you not get homework assignment and exams back?  Certainly those on the bubble at least had an idea?  At the start of every single class, we get a “you need this many points to pass this class” section of the syllabus…. Are guys not getting that?

OP-above is your answer. When in nursing, it is important to keep track of your grades. I really find it hard to believe that they didn’t see this coming or that didn’t get any feedback along the way. Now, if they didn’t...they might have a legal case against the school. Also keep in mind, when things like this happens; there is embarrassment (among other feelings). They might not be sharing the whole picture with you.

Yes we do get our grades back each time and a syllabus...... I really don’t understand how they were able to waste two years of their lives without any intervention makes no sense makes me wonder if I’m failing and have no idea about it either ?

I've never gone to school where the grades were hidden from the students, not even in the backward and the most corrupt country.

That's what they said. Can they prove it in courts?

If you are getting graded material returned throughout the term, you should be able to establish a passing grade if not a totally accurate letter grade. My granddaughter had this problem one time. There was a substantial discrepancy between her final grade and what she had been receiving as feedback. I told her she should have met with the instructor with her evidence, a written record and copies of assignments with the grade shown. She said she did not have that. I looked at her and said it is your own fault because you know I advised you to keep a written record of your grades. To this day she won't do that, I guess the urge to blow off good advice is too strong.

My program dropped people throughout as is the usual procedure. Big secret at the end is not normal, however we did have an instructor with issues who enjoyed telling people at the end of the term that she had failed them so they could not graduate. According to her she was tasked with this honor by the program administration, so in some instances there is no honor amongst thieves. I am sure somehow this individual had some kind of paper trail, although everyone who failed, (anecdotally) to a student, maintained that she blindsided them.

Now I’m freaking out, is a letter grade on a transcript enough ?
