Have B.S. and want an LVN/RN online program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I have a B.S. and want to change my career. I have all the pre-reqs to enter a nursing program. My problem is that I am a military wife stationed in Hawaii. Hawaii has very limited programs and I would have to pay out of state tuition. I am a Texas resident and would like to find a Texas distance learning program or even a reputable online program anywhere. Also, can I take the LVN or CNA test without a nursing degree? I would like to get started working in a hospital and getting experience. I noticed that in most RN programs you have to have a letter of recomendation from a previous medical employer to apply. How do I do that if I am not already licensed????

You can't do an entry level nursing program on-line. Clinical hours (time spent in a hospital with instructors) are state mandated. I suggest you bite the out-of-state tuition bullet and attend the program you have there.

You can't take the test without the diploma.

And good luck.

You cannot write the NCLEX-PN exam without attending nursing school and graduating from an approved program. The only exception in some states is if you were a corpsman in the military, some will permit you to write the exam. You can go thru a short course and get your CNA.

There are on-line program,s but you need to have your LPN/LVN license first, before you can go on for your RN.

There are some programs that can be completed and you would still need to do the clinicals in your area, but they are as expensive, if not more, than out of state tuition.

Check out the Distance Learning Forum here. Others may have some suggestions, but they will more expensive than your out of state tuition in Hawaii.

Try this online BS to BSN program. You have to do clinicals in an approved state. http://www.uwosh.edu/colleges/con/accelerated.php

Also, there are distance programs for TX residents, but you have to do your clinicals in that state. If you want more info, post for info from TX residents. I live in PA, so I don't know the specifics.

Good luck,

Yep, you MUST have some form of clinical practice so you cant do any part of it online-not even CNA. You could go to LPN school for a year and then I believe do the rest online--that would take a while. You could also go for a second Bachelors with an accelerated BSN that would take you a year to year-and-a-half.

You absolutely cannot take a liscensing exam without a degree, although I think in some states you can challenge the CNA with equivalent experience (like you've been through your first semester ofnursing school or had some training some where else.) Sorry!

I live in Virginia, and we have an online RN program that just started in Jan. The GPA is 3.2 minimum. You will have to pay the out of state fees ( if you get in). They go by GPA. Starting with 4.0, and that is based on you having taken all of their required prereqs in advance. I'm not sure about clinical sites.

Be careful about online because from the way I understand it there are several states that do not accept your RN degree if you got it online. I"m in CA and it's one of those states. If you want to be able to work in any state you live go to school to do it. Once you have RN then you can go online to do BSN and MSN or PhD.

Veteran here...this is what you do (and what I did). Military personnel can change their residency to any state they want and it will take effect immediately. I'm pretty sure spouses can do the same. Check with finance.

Having a previous degree means squat. Accelerated programs are just as long as JuCo ones. No online programs exist. And you can't work full-time. You'll just have to bite the bullet.

There is a program here in Texas where you can get either your ADN (through Del-Mar Community college) or your BSN (through TAMU-CC). You do online modules and work with an advisor to set up clinical times with a preceptor in your area.
