if you hate nursing, what would you rather do instead?

Published

just what the title asks. if you don't want to continue working in the nursing/healthcare field at all, what's your plan? what do you want to do instead? and if you hate nursing and have another idea but aren't actively pursuing it right now, why not?

(none of these questions are meant in a judgmental way at all. merely curious :-)

If I hated it I would have gone into crime scene investigation or forensics. I am still thinking about taking a forensic nursing program after I graduate and possibly being a forensic nurse but we will see!

A friend of mine got her ceritfication as a forensic nurse a number of years ago. She had the image of being Temperance Brennan on "Bones". What she ended up doing is rape kit after rape kit on drunken collage kids that will never get run by the years behind state crime lab. If swabbing secreations out of drunk, crying, angry, girls nether regions sound like a satisfying job- forensics may be for you. If not, you may want to look a little closer into your career opportunities.

Nursing is overrated. Computers is where it's at

oh my god that's been my experience

If I got burnt out or need a new adventure I would be down for being a paleontologist, pastry chef, or my ever favorite - run a booze cruise outta the Caribbean. These are all backup plans if I don't pass nclex too.

I don't hate nursing and most days I love my job, but if I were given the choice I'd be traveling the world with camera in hand. I really wouldn't mind turning my hobby into a career, but know it's not that realistic. Maybe if I have tomorrow night's winning lottery numbers?

I used to work part time in a rural ER that was across the road from a state men's prison. My boss there asked me if I was interested in SANE nurse training. I was shocked! What recently raped girl is going to want a large bearded man swabbing her nether regions I asked my boss? She replied, "Uh, you know, the prison across the street?"

As unpleasant as you make the job sound above, change "girl" to "convicted male felon" and see how it sounds.

Needless to say I turned down the opportunity.

WOW- you make doing rape kits on drunk angry collage girls sound pleasant. I didn't think that was possible. Thanks for the perspective.

I took 10 years off from nursing to be a software developer.. Then the tech bubble burst (back in the early 2K's) and here I am again, a nurse. /sigh. =)
