just what the title asks. if you don't want to continue working in the nursing/healthcare field at all, what's your plan? what do you want to do instead? and if you hate nursing and have another idea but aren't actively pursuing it right now, why not?
(none of these questions are meant in a judgmental way at all. merely curious :-)

I wouldn't say I hate nursing but I went through a period of time as an LPN where I was disgusted with it and spent a fair amount of time researching how to apply for air traffic control training. Had I not made the hard decision to go back to school to become an RN that would have been my likely path. I have no regrets.

I don't hate the profession, but my personality isn't necessarily compatible with it. In essence, I'm a lazy person with an artistic flair who doesn't like rigid work schedules.
I'd much rather be a professional student, food critic, mystery novelist, or world traveler. Why am I not doing any of these things right now?
Being a professional student is as expensive as hell for a person who is not rich. The demand for food critics is low. Due to declining literacy rates, the demand for novelists and writers is low. And again, traveling around the world is difficult when one is not rich.

Become a Flight Attendant. They do not discriminate and you still have time off to be creative. You work around great international food and see the world while still using those amazing nursing skills with some very interesting people. Of course you work 12-14 hours in sometimes turbulent skies and have to deal with missing holidays and being on your feet for long periods of time. Sound familiar?

I've taken a few of these tests (called MBTI for Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) which I believe are designed to gauge your personality - hoping that this would give me direction in what I might be happier doing - and it was a fail. Apparently the psychologist Carl Jung had a huge influence on its creation? After a few tries I seemed to align with two categories equally: "composer" or "crafter." Composer types are good for being artists, musicians, designers... and apparently social workers, psychologists, and forest rangers? Crafter types are good for being police, forensic pathologists, engineers or carpenters.
I have no interest in doing any of those things! I just want to ally with TheCommuter and be a student-foodie-world traveler-tinkerer-hobbyist. Can't I be paid to do that?
Oh, by the way, I'm trying to become a nurse since that's what I've always wanted to be.

I'm a new LVN, but I sometimes think that I'd be better suited to teaching somewhere in K-12. I used to really want to teach because I like working with children and really enjoy teaching. Alas, teachers aren't really paid that well and I don't really know if I want to spend all day with kids as my patience is lower than it used to be. Plus teachers bring a lot of stress home. The grass is always greener on the other side.

I dislike nursing and have been trying to figure out a way to continue to use my degree in more of an office setting. I think I would rather do secretarial or some kind of office work. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate them. I have two and a half years of psychiatric nursing experience.

I have come to the conclusion that I would like to work with machinery .
Don't get me wrong- I appreciate when i have a pt that appreciates what I do for them and is thankful . I am more than happy to help them out.
It's all the drunks, cokeheads, crack users, selfish family members, etc , that are rude, obnoxious and etc.I have had enough.
For the record- I went into nursing because I worked as a candystriper (lol im old) and volunteer with my great aunt at the local community hospital. Everyone there was happy to have the help, and very appreciative and kind. I enjoyed that I helped others, and they were thankful.
It's only after doing this for the last few years that I've realized that nursing sucks, and the general public sucks even more. What a rude, selfish, entitled bunch of people there are nowadays.
