Ever since I started nursing school, I noticed my hair has been falling out something horrible! Now I have little hairs sticking out all over my head like a Chia pet from the regrowth--thank God it is growing back! But it continues to fall out! It is scary, but a few of my classmates have noticed the same thing happening to them--is the stress really doing that much damage? Has any one else noticed this or any other bodily reactions?

It happened to me in my first semester. My hair was falling out in chunks. It eventually stopped happening. I was getting weird chest pain too that also went away. It's from the stress.

When hair falls out, the new growth will sometimes look like it is sticking straight up. This has to do with the inherent thickness of your strands of hair. People with finer hair don't have as much of a problem with the hair sticking up like that as it grows in as people who have coorificer hair.
Hair loss following gastric bypass surgery is very common and due to vitamin deficiencies because the area of the small intestine that absorbs most of the vitamins (the duodenum) being no longer used. The treatment for them is to take daily multi-vitamins. I have heard of some who double up their daily multi-vitamin to stop the hair loss. Don't take my word for this because I haven't had a chance to check it out, but I have heard that taking Biotin also helps stop hair loss.

Do you wear your hair in a ponytail? Sometimes this can cause those short strands.

Do you have any conditions or take any meds? I know steroids make my hair fall out in clumps.
I've heard that stress can cause it also. I've had pieces of new hair stick up. Luckily, it blends in easily. I had a clump fall out in the front and it started to grow back. When I went for a haircut, my hairdresser asked me when I decided to get bangs. Uh, they're not technically bangs.
I read somewhere that on average a person loses 100 strands of hair everyday.

Yes my hair has been falling out- and it's gotten really dry too. I chalk it up to poor nutrition- I plan on fixing my diet because it's getting to me.

I've been losing hair since I had my first baby. I haven't noticed it in the mirror, I still have thick hair, but I could make a wig out of the hair in my brush I use (and I clean the hair off it at least once a week--round one).
Too bad it doesn't fall out of my underarms or off my legs. I wouldn't complain about that!

My hair is falling out by the handfuls also. In my case in is stress. During the semester it falls out and falls out and falls out, and as soon as I'm on break it stops falling out and starts growing again. At this rate, I will be bald before graduation (5/07) comes!! Not only that, but the majority of what is growing back in is GRAY!!! I'm ONLY 21!!!! (really early graying does run in my family) It's to the point now that it is quite noticable that I'm going gray, and my classmates comment on it quite frequently. Not that I'm salt and pepper colored yet, but fast getting there. I think stress is causing most of it, it could be purely family history, but I like to chalk it up to stress! So, you will have an almost bald, the rest gray, 22 year old at graduation next May!
Glad to see I'm not the only one who is losing my hair, literally, over nursing school!

I had all kinds of skin issues when going through school - poor diet, irregular mealtimes, complete lack of sleep, stress, smoking.... yep, they all contributed.

I have had the same problem--my doctor told me it was alopecia. It is an autoimmune response from your body that causes the hair to fall out. Alopecia can be caused by stress, poor nutrition, etc. It is similiar to male pattern baldness.
My new hair growth is coming in a a weird gray/blonde color to top it off and i have medium brown hair. Nursing school is literally giving me grey hairs!!
