I've applied and am curious if anyone else on here is applying for Spring 2011. Good luck!
For those of you that are currently in the Fact program or have graduated recently (MPH and AW), I have been debating on what type of electronics is best to get for the program; my thoughts are Itouch or to get a smart phone (I am up for the new every two from VZ). Is one better or worse? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciate it? Thanks all.
P.S. Congratulations to all that have been accepted so far and good luck to those who are waiting!
Good question! Was wondering that myself.
When I was there on the campus tour I met Tibby, the guy who seems to be in charge of IT and their simulation lab. He was promoting the iTouch as a great tool, but he said smart phones are ok too. But his point of view was from the technical side; I don't think he was taking into consideration any of the practical aspects like cost or additional weight in your purse/backpack/bookbag/whatever it is we'll be lugging stuff around in. I'd love to hear what people say who've been using them.
Are you actually Alaska bound?
RX,
I met Tibby as well, and he was telling me about the same thing, I have been weighing out the options in my own head and this is what I have come up with...
The Itouch is expensive (I am looking at the $300 one) but as far as a smartphone you have to pay almost an extra $30 a month including what I normally spend on cell service (around $80 with lowest family plan), so there I would have paid for the Itouch in about 10 months of having the smart phone service. I was a Mortgage Loan Officer and had a blackberry then, although nice I never really used all the extra features except for email, so now I don't use a smart phone or any of that. Also the Itouch has practically no buttons, since we will be using it in a clinical setting with the germs and pathogens, this would be easier to clean, then a phone.
If I use a phone, even though the cost is a little more this will be helpful to have when I am a "new grad" for the sake of not having to carry a handful of electronics everywhere I go. I am sure the drug book are going to be an enormous help, and I would like to keep up with that information after school. I am a stickler about simplicity so this is why it is such a debate in my head. Also, the cost of the phone will be a lot cheaper than the Itouch because I have the new every 2 thing that gives me a credit of like $200 to get a new phone, I have been holding off until I figure out the best devide to use.
So... even though reading over this it looks like I have my mind set, I really want to get the opinions of those who have been using it, so that I can make a more informed decision.
As for being Alaska bound-- yes I am, it is a goal to live in Alaska, I think it is beautiful there and I want to have that experience at least for a few years, if I love I will stay and settle there. If it is not for me I will stay for a few years and then find another place. Either way I am excited. My mom actually called me the other day and said she heard back from Anchorage, AK on a position she applied for and she is a top contender! (she is a nurse as well)
I look forward to meeting you soon!
Here's a thread I started a long time ago about things to get out of the way before you start school: Things to get out of the way NOW if you are starting in the Spring - Nursing for Nurses
AW,
I looked at your link above and it is exetremely helpful, but if you don't mind can I ask some of the things that you used personally. The shoes you wear (easy spirit), are they all leather or cloth; does TJU have a preference? Also on older post (from past years) I noticed there were people not getting the pants that are on the order form, can you get different pants, as long as it is the same color or do you have to get what is on the form? Thanks for your help!

First of all, my opinion about the smartphone vs. separate PDA/iTouch: get the smartphone. It's one less thing to carry around. I had a PDA and so my pockets were overflowing with 2 pieces of electronics. :) Believe me, you will not believe the amount of stuff you will need to cram in your pockets during clinical! Just my opinion, of course. Others may disagree.
I used to wear Easy Spirit, but switched to Saucony, because I am an overpronator, and the Saucony shoes correct that. GET LEATHER!! First of all, you will be told you *must* get all leather. But besides that, the leather shoes protect much better against body fluids. :) True story: one of my clinical mates and I were assisting an elderly woman to use the commode. The darn commode seat bracket broke and FELL OFF as we placed her on it, and the "pot" fell on the floor. TG we were still holding on to her, so she did not fall. Well, her bladder was impatient and so we were holding her as she peed. We both got splashed. My partner said to me, "I was never so glad to be wearing leather shoes!". Lesson learned.
The pants. Ah, the pants. Some twits that are not part of the nursing faculty will tell you you MUST buy the pants from the bookstore. And some faculty will probably say that, too. If they are those stupid Landau pants with giant elastic waistbands, run away! Just buy some navy scrub pants. Lots of my classmates did that, and it was fine. No one ever said a peep to them. I was sorry I didn't get another brand of scrub pants. Everyone who bought the Landau scrub pants hated them, as they were uncomfortable. Maybe they will have changed the style by the time you start. Go with a drawstring or a drawstring + elastic pant. You will have to buy the shirts, as they are embroidered with Jefferson logos.
Hope that helps.

Congratulations to those of you here who are starting in the spring at TJU. I'm only right now planning to begin my pre-req's next semester...and there are a lot of them since I have a BA.
But, I wanted to offer to answer any off-campus housing questions you might have...pricing, locations, advice, etc. I've been living in the city for about 10 years now and have been a realtor here for 5.5 yrs (residential sales mostly).
Good luck in the program!
Chris,I applied Sept 1 and mailed everything Sept 2. I was invited for an interview last Thurs (Sept 9). Good luck!!

Hey, my name's is Christina and I'm brand new to this site but signed up because I am waiting on pins and needles for my letter from Jeff. I applied online on September 3rd and submitted all my requirements on September 15th which was the last day of the first deadline. Yesterday was supposed to be the deadline to hear back from Jefferson, but I haven't received my letter yet. It could be because of Veteran's Day that delayed it. But I called and the lady at the admissions office said it said in the computer I was set up for an interview, so I guess I'm confused as to what that means exactly. If you get an interview you're not necessarily accepted yet, right? And do they tell you the date your interview is or work around when you can come in? And how long does it usually take to hear back from them after the interview? Do you have a good chance of getting in if they interview you? I know that's a few questions. I've just been so nervous waiting to even receive a letter, and it seems some of you received letters fairly early because you got everything in a.s.a.p. So two months of waiting is keeping me on edge. Ugh haha.
Hey Christina,
I had submitted all of my stuff by the 12th of september and they emailed me the next week saying I had an interview. From there I kept emailing Nikki about times and dates that I would be available and from there we set up a date. I would definitely check your email or try calling Nikki directly to find out what happened? Maybe you had the wrong email??
They dont mail you anything until you get accepted. And my interview was a thursday, and I got an email the following monday saying I was accepted. The interview was really laid back so dont worry too much about that. I hope you figure out what is going on with your interview.
Atomic Woman,
Thank you for the information, sadly we still have to wear those aweful pants you are talking about. I had asked because I was a CNA a couple of years ago and we were provided uniforms and those were the pants and yes they are the most uncomfortable things ever. Thanks for the heads up on that and the smart phone situation. Also, good to know about the shoes, at least you didn't drop the lady.
Quick question: You said a smart phone is the best; do you know if it was a problem as far as some instructors not wanting you to use a phone or was this a non issue?
Thanks again for the information!
Sorry I haven't been doing a good job of keeping up with your questions. FACT is keeping me quite busy! But I am now officially halfway done!!! :)
I have an Itouch and it works well for me. I do not have my phone with me on the floor since we can't make calls on the floor. However, there are some students who have the nursing software installed on their smartphones and it works for them. Clinical instructors do not care. Overall, it's whatever you feel most comfortable with.
I wore the elastic Landau pants for my first rotation...and then that was it. They were way too uncomfortable! I bought some drawstring pants, navy blue of course.
Keep your questions coming! :)
Hi!
I applied for the second round of admissions. And have an interview set for Tuesday. As far as living in the city, if you have any questions as to where to live. What apartment companies not to use, and to use. I can help. Whether I am admitted to the program or not.
I currently live near by campus, but out of the "center city" rep. I am really hoping to get into the program. And look forward to meeting some of you!

I checked last year's thread. It looks like some people in the 2nd review period didn't hear anything until the beginning of December. Oh, the suspense!!
