I've applied and am curious if anyone else on here is applying for Spring 2011. Good luck!
I did not have to take the GRE's because my GPA was higher than a 3.2
My major was biochemistry and I have been a nurse aide for the past 2 years so I do have some experience, however you do not need any clinical hours to be accepted. So don't let that hold you back if you have no nursing experience! :)
Hey all! I was already accepted to TJU, I called the Financial aid office because I am going to have to get enough loans to pay for all this, they told me that I need to wait to apply until next Jan. but I really want to get started with the process because I am nervous of the process and bumps that come with having student loans. These will be the first loans I have ever had so I am a little new to this. When are you that are getting student loans going to start applying and is anyone else going to have to get private loans?
I also need to take out loans, not just for the program but also for living expenses too. I have no idea about the process either, because this is my first time with loans also. I do not even know if I should go through a bank to get a loan or someone the school recommends. Maybe that sounds like a dumb quetion but this is all new to me. I am not even sure someone will give me enough of a loan to cover all my expenses. Can you get different loans from different places?
From what I have been looking at you can get a loan from the government up to 12,500 max. and then from there you can get private loans, the school has a list of preferred lenders and when I was looking at the suntrust website it looks like I could potentially get about $60,000 but I will need a cosigner. Those two together should cover my expenses. Because I will need living and school expenses paid as well. So I don't know, I hate thinking about this part of it.
I haven't done student loans before, but I've been researching a little. You have to wait until January 2011 to apply for federal aid for the 2011-12 school year, so don't be too anxious, AK. :-) Being overzealous by locking down private loans now for the whole expense will put you at a financial disadvantage, since federal student loans have a much lower interest rate than private loans. Take the $12,500 from the feds, then get private loans for the rest. And try to find the lowest interest rate you can. Also, keep in mind that just because Jefferson recommends a particular bank does not necessarily mean that it's the best option for you. Shop around.
You could also take out a private loan for summer and fall next May, then wait until December to take out on for the winter/spring - it'll save you some more money in interest. The year's tuition is not due to Jefferson up front, so you can wait, but make sure you qualify for enough before beginning the program. Just because you qualify doesn't mean you have to take it all out in one shot at the banks.
If you're concerned about not qualifying for a loan, begin establishing credit now by getting a credit card, making small purchases, then paying them off IN FULL every month and on time. Do NOT carry balances! Then keep that habit, so that you have a great credit score. Great credit score = lower interest on your bank loan.
Also, begin saving now for living expenses. You probably won't save enough between now and next May to live off for a year, but anything you can save now will save you money in the future, since you'll have less debt and less interest to pay off. That's what I've been doing the past 2 years, since I don't want to take out loans for living expenses. I don't like debt.
I finished the program last year. Two pieces of advice: (1) Sleep all you can now, because baby, you will miss sleeping once you start the program. :) (2) shop around for student loans. I got a Discover private loan with a 3.75% rate and no co-sign (it depends on your personal circumstances) and a 2% graduation bonus. That rate is lower than the Federal student loan rate. So shop around before you commit to any private loans. Best of luck to all of you. Remember, sleep!
