Had my OR observation this week...I'm in love

Published

Well I was able to observe in the OR this week and man I just can't stop thinking about it! It was honestly so awesome. I was able to see the room being set up, the pt being brought in and put under, the surgery (an open cholesytectomy, so AMAZING!!!), went with the pt to the PACU. I cannot say enough good things about it! They even brought me a stool to stand on, so I had the best view! I felt like I was witnessing a birth waiting for the gall bladder to be removed. The circulating nurse let me put gloves on and touch the gall bladder and feel the gall stones inside of it. Totally cool to be touching something that just a few moments before had been inside of the patient. Now honestly, before I started school, I always envisioned myself doing OB, but this is definitely something I am interested in knowing more about! The surgery, the teamwork in the OR, the entire process was so interesting to me. I am hoping that we will get to observe again, maybe during our fall semester. So anyways I just wanted to share my excitement! :D

I remember that feeling of the moment I realized I had discovered my nursing niche.

Congratulations! I am happy for you.

While I enjoyed my OR rotation for the things I saw (CABG being the best of them) I decided to not touch OR with a ten foot pole when my observational day was done. It's a very different atmosphere.

That is awesome that you found something you love. It makes deciding what you want to do so much easier.

I have gone into many units on my clinicals and by chance ended up in the ER for the night on my Peds rotation and I FELL IN LOVE!!!! I knew then the ER was for me.

Anyway, it's an awesome feeling and congratulations!
