On the optimistic note I had an interview today for Rehabilitation restoration Nursing home. The interview went pretty good and the HR said they will consider me (even though technically I'm still new grad,I guess my home health experience doesnt count as acute experience). The interview was long and laid back. The HR person said I gave very good answers to the extent that he couldnt keep up with me:clown: A lot of typical interview questions.I noticed this place has a lot of residents/patients with foot wounds so he asked me if I have any experience with wound care,I told him just the school clinical and very seldom dressing packing or changing in my home health job ,but I did honestly told him that not too much. It is a part time position with flies great with me since I arleady have a second job (home health). The HR person told me that they have a lot of nurses to interview (they need 3 nurses)and he will let me know about the decsion friday or next week (I guess to set me up for second interview).I wanted to share this with inexperienced unemployed nurses please go to open houses job fairs (that is how I got an interview for this job), look through the ads, nursing magazines,so you can get those interviews!

Ps.I wish I could get this job, but on the other hand I'm nervous since I dont have too much hands on skills (the downfall of home health care) but I did develop some awsome admission skills, teaching skills and assessment skills.

Specializes in Acute Care, CM, School Nursing.

Good for you!

Also, don't downplay your experience! Home health has certainly taught you some valuable skills. Be proud of yourself, you're learning every day!

Best wishes!

Specializes in Psych, OB-GYN.

Way to go! I agree with not downplaying your experience - I'm sure you know more than you realize!! There were some areas that I was weak in when I interviewed - I went to psych out of school and was switching to acute - so I had no skills. I really played up how quickly I learned and how excited I was about being taught. Hope they call you soon!!!!

Specializes in Med surg, LTC, Administration.

What punkydoodles said. I hope you got excited about wound care. Even if you don't have experience, passion about wounds would have sold him since that is what they do.

Specializes in Rehab/LTC.

I worked in rehab/LTC as a new grad. I had 4 days of orientation. So, at least you have some experience with assessments, charting, etc. Hospitals are being pretty selective right now, so LTC and rehab facilities are a about the only start for new grads.

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Where I have worked HH got tons of wound care..but I will say it is easy to pick up the skills as each wound is different so there are many different wound care protocols and in Rehab you should be able to get to know the basics real quick.. Do not downplay yourself.. The experience you have is yours! No one can ever take that away! And ICU nurse may have experience in some things yet zip in another area. It is okay. And believe me the assessment, admission and teaching skills will be rock solidly used in ever single nursing job you ever do.. Good luck with the job!!

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

Successful interviewing is an important skill also and it sounds like you are doing great with that one! Good luck.

Specializes in Cardiac Nursing.

Congrats on the interview. What everyone else said, don't downplay your experience. Getting an interview right now is an amazing thing :yeah:

Good luck, but keep in mind...it's very difficult for new grads right now. Don't be surprised if you don't hear back...or don't hear back right away. We've all had interviews that seem to go well but them don't pan out! Don't lose hope. Just my :twocents:!!
