In a word, yes. She will have to pass a basic math proficiency exam, but as long as she can learn the necessary formulas and do basic calculations, she'lll probably be alrright. Nurses are notoriously poor mathmeticians, as a group. Sad, but true.

Also, high school algebra, sometimes college, is usually a prerequisite. She'd best get a tutor for that.

In the program I'm in you have to pass Algebra and Calculus as well as Statistics in order to graduate. I am also terrible in Algebra so I took 2 remedial courses before the real thing and I did fine.

Yowza...pretty tough requirements! Is that a BSN program?

Well include me in the group.....I"m terrible at math!!!! I don't know why....I just am... :confused: In my nursing program the only math required is Math 116: Medical Mathematics and it's only 1 credit. I do plan on transferring to a university so I have to find out if any additional math is required from my career counselor.

Well I guess it would depend on what school she is going to.I'm in a ADN program and you have to have at least a B average in college algebra to graduate.So if she is having a hard time with algebra,and the schooll that she is going to requires a B or higher,I would suggest she get a tutor.I have seen some nurses that really suck in math ,but are wonderfull nurses and don't have a problem figuring out what doses of medicine to give patients and can figure out calculations in a snap! As long as she can do that,and meets the grade requirements to pass she should be alright.

Now if she wanted to get her BSN then I'd say she would have a hard time ,because all the BSN programs I have looked at require a passing grade in algebra,statistics,and calculas,or at least thats how it is at the colleges and universities where I live.

Absolutely. I have a math block that's fairly serious. I read James Joyce and post-modern theory for fun, but I can't do algebra. My father was a mathematician at Berkeley before switching to chemical engineering, so I should have had the genes for it, but I can't do math.

I work hard before simple dosage calulations exams. I can;t do ratio proportion; I had to figure out my own system for dosage calculations as nothing anyone taught made sense to me.

I have never made less than a B in any nursing course and I am in my final semester of school. WHEEW and all without algebra. Of course, I am going to have to tackle it in a couple semesters to go on and get into the Master's track program (and statistics which is my worst nightmare,) but I'll muddle through i am sure.

Yes, because i hate algerbra and had to have a tutor. I saw no point in it and struggled. However, as far as nursing math goes for dosage calc. etc. I see the point and know how important it is to be able to do this efficiently. I may not like it, but there is a definite reason for it and a human life may depend on it so I will learn it and learn it well.

Oh my... Thats somewhat scary that she feels this way.

Our BSN program you have to have Intermediate Alg, College Alg and Statistics. Each is challenging in its own right. College Alg would be a killer if you are "math Challenged", and Stat's would be a nightmare! BUT, I guess it also depends on the Prof who teaches it!

I too know a gal who is pretty much taking Math and Science classes twice just to get a C. I honestly dont know how she's going to make it through. Sad, but I did have a talk to her about A&P (which she's going to take next yr) and she took my advice to just take the one class. I still dont think it will help. She's not dumb, just has real difficulties with Math and Science. Honestly, I dont know if I would want her for MY nurse. What if she does the med calc wrong?
