I am curious what made you guys get into nursing

Im thinking about it but I think a part of me is unsure/scared

Im 24 and have a bachelors degree already

I thought about going back for nursing, education or counseling/socialwork

Nursing seems to have more openings though

I am thinking about pros/cons of each

I started my nurse training when I was 23 having completed a degree course in a totally unrelated subject!

Nursing was something I always wanted to do from the age of 7 but my parents discouraged it (the pay is s*1t in the UK). In the last year of my degree I had an accident that left me lying flat on my back for 6 weeks in hospital & all of a sudden I just knew I really wanted to be doing the job of the wonderful nurses who looked after me so well.

I graduated in 1992 and have never regretted the decision to do my training, especially as it is helping me fulfil my ultimate dream of coming to the USA. If you want something badly enough you'll find a way to do it. Good luck!!

Thank you guys for your responses...I am definitely toying with the fact of nursing. I majored in Information Systems and the job marKET is awful which led me to re evaluate my career goals. I dont want to be in a field thats saturated

My aunt told me that you dont have to work nights if you dont want to but she is an LPN though

She works for the state gov't

I work nights now but I hate it

Im glad to see that you guys like nursing

Hey Nurseguy...I went in to nursing (in school now) after being a medic for ...12 years. The pay (as a medic) absolutely sucks, and the hours are brutal if you want any type of family life.

I've worked in a hospital...nights...for awhile now though, and it's great!! It allows me to be home all day with the kids. And I'm not crazy enough to work 3 shifts in a row so sleep isn't "mandatory" when I get home. I get to take the kids to school...go shopping with the wife..whatever.

And I know that when I do graduate (1 yr. left) I'll be making even more money than I do now, which'll help a lot.

Have a gr8 day.

i am starting my nursing degree because i wanted to be a doctor. and i figure if i don't get into medical school being a nurse practitioner is just as close as i can get to being a doctor with out actually being one. and helping people is what i want to do. i also love responsiblility and would like to do a doctors without borders mission.

are male nurses typically made fun of by outsiders?

You said that you hate nights? I love it. Where I work, there's less politics and the back stabbing and grumbling then what you typically see on the day shift. No offense intended to the ladies but, Whenever you get a whole room full of female nurses together, they can be difficult (to put it nicely). As charge, I have an oppurtunity to take part in the interview process and staffing. With the exception of one female nurse, I have an all guy crew. Each shift five guys and one female! We work together and get it done. No wineing, bickering, grumbling and such. Oh yea, we have free parking on nights. Day people pay $10 per day, Its another reason I work nights.

Hey! I want to work for you! I would certainly prefer to work with men! Yes, I'm a man.

Not to our faces! And we seem to be a stabilizing influence on MD's that have a rep for throwing things around and generally intimidating the girls. If they want to play that way, I would invite them to play basketball after work..REAL physical basketball...POE

The short answer: Job Security

The short story version:

I held a position in management at a large telecommunications company. I moved up the ladder, due to my experience and performance and not due to my education (I had a high school diploma). After working there for about 5 years, I realized business management was not for me. Also, it did not help that so many jobs within the organization were being outsourced to the Philippines or India. So, in addition to not liking my job, I didn't feel like I had a shred of job security.

I have some friends in the nursing field that really opened my eyes to all of the possibilities there are in the nursing field. Most important to me was job security. I look forward to having a job where I'm not worried about my position being outsourced or laid off. The facility I worked at was shut down in September of 2005. :(

Luckily for me...in 2004, I started looking into the various nursing programs in northern Nevada. I was going to get an ASN at the community college here, but I quickly realized that it would take me 2 years to satisfy the prerequisite classes to apply for the program. The BSN program at the university had similar prerequisites, but required more core classes. So, I figured I can take the prerequisite courses and add enough core classes to my school schedule to get accepted into the BSN program here. I started taking classes in the summer of 2004. I took all of my core and prerequisite classes at the community college here, which saved a lot of money and all transferred directly to the university. I just recently received my acceptance letter to the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno and I start nursing courses this fall and will graduate in December of 2007.

I've worked in healthcare for 16 years and have held every non-clinical position you can imagine. I am currently a financial counselor for a substance abuse hospital. I have not felt for sometime now that I have the impact on the care of my patients that I want to have. I want more contact, more impact, and more helping people to happen.

aside from that, job security, versatility of the degree/license in what you can do for a living. Oh, and money is better than what I make now.

I am not a nurse yet but the reasion why i want to go into nurseing is because I like to help other peopple and I also like the Aderlin rush . I use to do ride alongs at a local ambualnce company and they where the ones who realy turned me on to the medical feild. right now i am in medical assistanting school then i will be going on from there to get my lpn then my rn.

Er... yeah. They stop laughing when I tell them that I make 90K a year. Before the overtime. And six weeks vacation. And my coworkers are all beautiful nurses.
