Guys Hope life is treating you well
I am curious what made you guys get into nursing
Im thinking about it but I think a part of me is unsure/scared
Im 24 and have a bachelors degree already
I thought about going back for nursing, education or counseling/socialwork
Nursing seems to have more openings though
I am thinking about pros/cons of each
After I was laid off from my old job I decided that I needed a new career so I researched several options. I wanted a career where I could be in demand and never be unemployed again, I wanted a career where I could help people, and I wanted a career where I could make make enough money to support myself reasonably well. Nursing was one of the few career choices that gave me all of these things.
LOL...........That dosen't necessarily work. I can speak up, b/c I am a young, female RN. (And to think: guys think girls are silly!)
And it truely disturbs me that so many female nurses think that it's so cute and funny when guys say "I went into nursing to meet girls."
No wonder so many of my female colleagues complain about their male partners/husbands. They actually thought that the mentality was cute at one time. 5-10 years later, they're not so cute anymore.
THANKS you gus are cool for responding to this post which has received overwhelming resposonses
AMay I ask what career you were in prior?
I am in IT ( hahaha so you can imagine the jobs that are available which are really scarce.) Where I work, the ppl put in 50 hr work weeks and have to be on call 24/7 DAILY...I said to myself this cant be the field I want to persue
The thing about nursing is, I have a back problem so I dont know how that would effect me
I was a medic once in D.C.. My supervisor gave me a pamphlet on a scholarship program for nursing in D.C., and I thought it would be fun to take the test. Well, I passed with flying colors and won a tuition paid LPN program, along with grants for books, supplies and daily expense money. When I graduated, I went back to being a medic, until the Board notified me that, unless I took the next Board exam, I would have to start all over again. Took the exam, and became a nurse....almost 19 years ago. Haven't regretted it.
Thank you guys for your responses...I am definitely toying with the fact of nursing. I majored in Information Systems and the job marKET is awful which led me to re evaluate my career goals. I dont want to be in a field thats saturatedMy aunt told me that you dont have to work nights if you dont want to but she is an LPN though
She works for the state gov't
I work nights now but I hate it
Im glad to see that you guys like nursing
Have you thought of combining your careers?
Nursing Informatics is up and coming.
There is a forum here about it.
Well I want a job that I wont have to worry bout if it is secured or not. I know nursing pays descent money. But I want to look for the future also.I guess I should let my bad experience of night shift work at my job I have now not influence my decision for nursing
It seems alot of people chose this career due to the security of the profression..this is definitely one job that cant be outsourced
So do you work 3 12 hr shifts and have 4 days off? that seems like a coool schdule
While I doubt you'll ever lack for a job don't be fooled into thinking that nursing can't be outsourced. In reality it can't but it can be insourced.
Foreign nurses want to come here and are willing to work hard, nights and weekends for the opportunity.
If you don't want nights I'd suggest you look into hemodialysis. No Sundays either.
And I've seen many presentations of virtual nursing. Interesting concept.

I have always had a interest in the medical field. When I was 18 I dispatched for an ambulance service. I started EMT classes and would do some ride alongs with the crews. About a month into EMT I went on a call and saw a little boy die, and I could not deal with this. I quit the ambulance and went into retail. I got a degree in management and worked in sales for almost 10 years. During that time I met my wife and we had 2 children. My wife was a medical assistant and then went back to school and became an RN. 3 years ago she had major surgery and got a couple of infections. She was on IV antibiotics for over a month and I had to help with that along with cleaining her wound. I began to get the fever again. I joined my local fire department and the race was on. I went and got my EMT and work for an ambulance service and do the fire department which does QRS medical calls. In August of last year I started nursing school(same school wife went to) and I have not looked back since. I already have been told I have a job in the ED soon as I graduate(same hospital as my wife). I plan on challenging the medic test soon as I gruaduate so I can have PHRN. I want to work ED for a couple years for more experiance. Then 1 year of critical care and going for flight nurse. Hospital has bigger plans for development and want to go to level 1 trauma unit. I love Trauma now, the rush of the situation is just something that can not be put into words. I would not want to do anything else.
