Guys what made you chooose nursing

Published

Guys Hope life is treating you well

I am curious what made you guys get into nursing

Im thinking about it but I think a part of me is unsure/scared

Im 24 and have a bachelors degree already

I thought about going back for nursing, education or counseling/socialwork

Nursing seems to have more openings though

I am thinking about pros/cons of each

Specializes in ER, Corrections, LTC, ICU, Case Mgt.

I was a paramedic prior to nursing school. I thought nursing would give the opportunity to expand my knowledge base, and I would never be without a job.(in hindsight, never rich either)

Job security, money, CRNA. That's why I choose nursing... I don't really want to go through med school, but I want the doctor pay. CRNA seemed the only way to pull that off. I'm a RN student right now... one of 2 men in a class of 40. It's still kinda strange not having a group of guys to talk to about school.... sometimes I wanna talk about "man" stuff while on breaks from class...

I was a medic in the Air Force twenty years ago. Three years ago at my construction job a wall fell on my head, wake up call! I applied to nursing school as soon as I recovered, I start clinicals this week and I am looking forward to having patient contact again after practicing on dummies and my fellow classmates.

are male nurses typically made fun of by outsiders?

Some of my fellow construction workers did until I told them I was one of two men in a class of twenty four.

....and then they find out you're making twice as much as they are.

I'm so glad I'm not in construction anymore.

Specializes in sub-acute.

Five years ago the thought of being a nurse never even crossed my mind. Then, I suffered a career ending injury that prematurely ended my USMC career at 12 years. I moved back home and was not prepared for life as a civilian.

So, I looked in the papers and decided that I'd try out being a CNA. Took the course and was happily working as a CNA. The LTC facility I work at started sponsoring CNA's to become LPN's.

I took them up on the offer and as of today, I am an LPN.

Lots of reasons to be a nurse, but as in any career, if you love what your doing you've found the right job.

Specializes in Mental Health and MR/DD.

I worked at a LTC as direct care staff and enjoyed doing that, but I wanted to do more so I took it to the next step and became a RN.

Specializes in Trauma Administration/Level I Trauma.

I was New Orleans based Paramedic and wanted to increase my knowledge base. The increase and in job security and pay were added bonuses.:)

Best of luck, my brother is a CRNA and that's my long term goal as well.
