Guys Hope life is treating you well
I am curious what made you guys get into nursing
Im thinking about it but I think a part of me is unsure/scared
Im 24 and have a bachelors degree already
I thought about going back for nursing, education or counseling/socialwork
Nursing seems to have more openings though
I am thinking about pros/cons of each
do you find working nights to be stressful on your body (i.e. is it hard to sleep in the day) I work nights now and those are my problems but like other posters mentioned, it seems there are sooooo many options that I may not have to work those 3rd shift hoursIm ever grateful for this forum.
It seems the stigma that all male nurses are gay are fading away
LOL
I wouldnt even say that ALOT of male nurses are gay, let alone all or most.
Job security seems to be in nursingIm only 24 but with my degree it seems a waste. Been interviewing for jobs for a yr and no luck which has led me to consider nursing.
I had thought about Radiology but it seems Nursing has more options.
So if you had to do it all over again would you still consider nursing?
My aunt is an LPN and tells me I should consider it. She loves it
Although she doesnt work in a hospital, she doenst have to work night shift..I THINK THAT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO LUCKY!
I'm a 24 year old too; I graduated with my ADN in December. I am starting my first RN job next month, and I'm really excited. I originally went into nursing because I knew I would always have a job. (I don't think they'll ever replace nurses with computers.) I also like the hours; I'll be working a weekend option (fri,sat,sun--days--36 hours, but paid for 40). Can't beat that kind of deal. There are so many positions available, you should be able to find a job that you don't have to work nights....I couldn't do nights, either. There are also a lot of options within the career. If you get burnt out in one area, there are plenty of other areas to try out.
I am working toward my BSN already, because I want to get certified in Ostomy Nursing.
WOW SOMEONE MY AGE HERE!! HOW IMPRESSIVE
Congrats on your new job..what hours are you working on your 3 weekend option?
WOW ..So did you have another career or job prior to the ADN?
I am strongly thinking about it bc I want to have a job and flexiblity also. So did you have a hard time finding work?
Im intrerested in hearing more especially since you and I are same age

Well, I am a girl, so I may have a little different perspective on things. (I just had to respond to your post because you are the same age, and there dosen't seem to be a lot of that)
I will be working 7a-7p fri, sat, and sun.
I didn't have another career prior to my ADN. I did work in a hospital ER as a tech before I started nursing school, and for a while into nursing school. I gained a lot of clinical experience there. The nurses I was working with were wonderful, and very willing to work with me and teach me.
The only problem I had in finding a job is that I didn't go the internship route. You had to apply in October for January internships, and I didn't want to do it. I stayed focused on that last semester, then the NCLEX. There are jobs out there, though that do not require internships. If I had wanted to work in a specialty area, I would have applied to an internship, but I just wanted to work in Med/Surg.
I think the facility I have chosen to work at will give me great experience; there will be a lot to learn. It's a long term acute care facility; they do ventilator weaning, rehab, etc. I am going for my BSN because I think it will make me more "marketable". Since you already have a Bachelor's Degree, I would think you would be okay to go for a BSN.....you probably already have most of the pre-req's, if not all of them.
If you want my opinion about guys in nursing..........I think it's great. I've worked with several male nurses, and went to school with several guys. Guys make awesome nurses; and none of them were "not straight" (if you know what I mean). There was no loss of "manliness" there.
Plus, if I ever decide to get married and have a family, I'll have time to do it. I wouldn't want to be an 8-5 mom and/or wife who never sees her family.
What do you guys find to be the most difficult part about being a nurse or male nurse? ( the blood or bodily fluids or waste or just the lack of nurses/shortage)?I know there is a darkside to nursing just like every profession
I think the most difficult part of nursing is dealing with the family memebers.
