Gulf Coast State College Spring 2014 Class

Anyone else out there apply to GCSC and waiting for acceptance or anyone already get accepted? I got my letter last Friday and have seen only one other person! Looking for other students!!

This is the one people keep suggesting:

Nurse Mates Women's Dove

and Dansko is the other brand, but I am not sure I could wear shoes like that!!

I am wondering if they have to be all leather?? I am reading that most schools do not allow any type of cloth on the shoes and if that is so for GCSC then we will have to find some that do not have cloth like most tennis shoes do. People keep mentioning the Nike Shox.

Ahhh I just ordered my stethoscope. It makes it feel more real..lol. I had heard that its a problem with people stealing stethoscopes if they are good quality. Maybe I will order a stethoscope cover to make mine even more distinctive. I wonder if we can even use stethoscope covers lol.

I will have to look into shoes. I agree that it would be easier if there was just one product for each category and every nurse uses the same one! I think deciding on a back pack is going to drive me INSANE haha!

Oh cool!!! That does make it seem more real! I can't believe we will be in school in two months..YIKES!!

I wonder if we can have covers b/c that would def help keeping them if each of us had something totally different from the other?? Maybe that is something we can find out soon via a grad or maybe when we go to orientation.

I have been trying to decide on that too. I will probably doing the rolling as I have problems with my back and don't need to be worrying about that b/c of books and all of our stuff!

Are you going tomorrow?

I might go ahead and order one. They aren't expensive or anything, and it would be nice to be able to use it and make our stethoscope that much more distinguished. I ended up going with the coral. I'm just not sure we would be able to use them, like if it would be too much for a uniformed look.

I don't blame you with the rolling back back. I hurt my back when I was an aid catching a resident, and it still gives me trouble sometimes. I don't know if I can do a rolling one though. I read that a good one is ones used for hiking, like northface or even ll bean, and others say even just a jansport works.

I will be going tomorrow, probably first thing after I drop my boys off at school so I can get it done before I have to pick them up. My name is Lindsey by the way. I don't think I've ever said it.

Good to know steth color isn't an issue. 25 is awesome with CD! Best I saw online was 37.

I've heard the same thing about theft, apparently quality stethoscopes are a hot commodity for itchy fingered docs and nurses. I'm just going to make sure to not let mine out of my sight. I'll probably take it to things remembered to have my name put on it just in case. I could also go with the super tacky option and just sharpie my name on the tubing! (jk)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to use my small rolling luggage as a book bag. I have a couple of backpacks if all that room isn't necessary. I'm in a bit different situation shoe wise being a guy, probably going to pick up some good old white Reeboks.

I'm going first thing tomorrow too, my name is John.

Where can you find a cover for the stethoscope?? I didn't even know they had them!! I like that idea so that we can make them our own and if someone steals it and we see it we can be like "hey that's mine"!

I am not 100% on the rolling back pack. Vera Bradley has one and one nursing student said she loves hers and uses her tote on the days it isn't necessary, so I may look into that one and if not I have totes that I can use til I find one that works best for me!

I was planning on going tomorrow morning too after I dropped my girls off at school. My name is Jessica, but everyone calls me Jessi;)

I am in 4th semester and about to graduate! yay! some tips... Make sure you do all the math worksheets and get the calculating with confidence book. I used that every semester. first 8 weeks they allow you to get an 80% on your first try. any semester after that its 90%. We lost 2 people first 8 weeks from the math. Get the yellow Saunders book and the HESI examination book and refer to that when studying. When prepping for tests DO QUESTIONS! the nclex prep books have web codes or questions in the book related to the content your going over. Practice that BP! we lost another student due to failing that check off. Teachers don't mess around when it comes to the check offs. Davis drug guide is essential for clinicals and doing your paperwork. every thing you need is in that book. if you have tattoos make sure they're covered. no crazy make up or hair color. a teacher made a comment to a fellow student that she didn't look professional for her heavy makeup. WHITE SHOES with nothing else on them. they will make you dress in clinical attire first semester and you line up like the military while the teacher looks you up and down. I live in Santa Rosa beach and drove the 45 min for the whole program but found 3 other girls who also lived in destin so we saved literally thousands by carpooling. if you can don't take any other classes while your taking the nursing courses. The amount of reading and studying will take up all your time. Make sure your spouse/kids/significant other knows what your getting into. We had several divorces and breakups during our 2 yrs and several missed plays, sports games, time with family etc due to the amount of time the program requires. Don't have kids while your in the program! we lost another girl due to complications of her pregnancy. a few girls had babies and found it very difficult to take care of their child while in the program due to the amount of stress a new baby and school has. know your A&P like the back of your hand and you should be ok. You will buy a lab kit and use it 3 times and not even use everything in it... annoying and a waste of $$! if you have a friend you can share lab kits to save $$. don't buy 100 supplemental books. THe saunders and HESI comprehensive review should be enough. another tip is to rent your books on chegg.com or book renter.com I paid about $20-$30 for each book. You don't need a rolly bag. I got one and everyone has one but the only thing you need is your LAG, some paper and your book in class. I used it for a couple weeks and me along with everyone else realized we didn't need all the stuff and just got a regular back pack. There are a lot of ups and downs but you will get through it! let me know if you have anymore questions!Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the tips! Congrats for making it all the way through and good luck on the NCLEX!

I found some on Etsy. They run between 5-20, some really cute ones ! I might order one, I still dont know..lol. So indecisive.

Thanks for the tips! Good to know about the book bag. I'll probably for sure just grab a regular backpack that I like somewhere now that I know I don't need one to carry a ton of stuff everywhere. Thanks for the info about the tattoos as well, I have one on the back of my neck that is easily hidden by my hair if I need to, as well as one on my wrist that a hair band or watch can cover.

What is the best HESI review book to get?

Another plus for stethoscope covers is that lipids from skin cause a chemical reaction in PVC tubing that causes it to stiffen or crack over time. If you wear it on your neck, the cover should prevent this.

WOW!! Lots of info! Thanks so much! Now I am super nervous.LOL!!!

I'm a little late to the discussion but I also made it into the spring class! There was a lot of great info in the posts. Thanks for sharing!
