Anyone else out there apply to GCSC and waiting for acceptance or anyone already get accepted? I got my letter last Friday and have seen only one other person! Looking for other students!!

No problem at all! A sane amount of overpreparation is not silly at all, especially when even the simple stuff has the potential to drop you from the course. Besides, the practical skills are things we will be using regularly after graduation anyway, so it isn't as though extra practice goes to waste.

Thanks for the info again. I've started looking at stethoscopes and such. Does anyone know if we can buy colored ones, or do they need to be standard black?

I am going to look for books sometime either today or tomorrow when I can find the time. I have a 15% off coupon code for alibris books (just go to the website and you can get it too). I ordered from there before and it was a good experience. If you go to the website and sign up, they will send you discounts, and I know they are running discounts now, so I'll probably check there first. Every bit of savings helps!

Not sure on color, mine is gray so I hope it's allowed (bought it used so not like I can exchange it). I probably wouldn't show up with a crazy rainbow colored chestpiece but I would think normal colors are all right.

I was kind of leaning towards a pink one, but I don't want to get a good one and end up not being able to use it because of the color, so I'll just stick with a regular black one. I'm sure gray will be fine!

Is Cox's Clinical Applications Of Nursing Diagnosis the guide for nursing diagnoses and interventions you were talking about?

So, I found out a bunch of helpful information today.

Most of the supplemental texts we shouldn't need. The guide for nursing diagonses and interventions will get used a lot, so that one is key. NCLEX review/prep book is also vital. Other than that, not so much; maybe on an individual basis depending on what helps you personally. As far as the CD that comes with the first text, I'm not sure. She said they didn't use it but I'm not positive as to which edition of the book she had (2012 grad).

She also showed me an awesome resource, Nursing Central. It is a massive online database of disease, drug, terminology and (lab) test information. The subscription costs 150 for a first year and 100 per afterward, but it seems to be quite worth it considering the price of the texts alone would get you there, and the portability factor in huge. She said it was a godsend during clinicals and she wishes she knew about it during first semester.

For clinicals, shoes *must* be all white, including the logo. 2 pairs of scrubs (white top, blue bottom) and one white lab jacket should be enough. Definitely remember the lab jacket if you get cold easily.

Also, she recommended that I start practicing taking manual B/P early, because we get tested on it after 1 week and if it isn't accurate within 2 points or so of the proctor, it's adios senor/senora. Besides the stethoscope and B/P cuff, she recommended a good penlight, scrubs with as many pockets as possible, and a clipboard with a built in calculator. I was advised to go cheap on the B/P cuff but get the best stethoscope I reasonably could.

There was more, but that's the gist of it. I would say for me personally, I am going to absolutely hammer my anatomy review prior to class, especially since I haven't taken part II yet.I'm also probably going to make my wife and family hate me after all the times I am going to try to take their vitals, lol.

Yes, that's the one.

We can buy our stethoscopes in any color. I asked my advisor just be sure b/c my Aunt was wanting to purchase mine and said black isn't a good choice b/c in the hospitals they get mixed up very easily. So she suggested we get a colored one!

Oh ok thanks! I will probably go with a colored one then. It makes sense about them getting mixed up if they all look the same. I also thought about just getting a black one, and then getting one of those stethoscope covers to be able to tell mine apart, but Idk if those things interfere with anything though.

I ordered a few of my books last night. I was able to find Fundamentals one, with CD, for less than $25. I was excited about that! Has anyone figured out what kind of book bag you will be getting? I keep reading so many mixed reviews about what is the best kind. Some say you can use a regular back, others are suggesting huge rolling back packs.

Everything is starting to sink in that we start nursing school, and I'm getting so nervous !

Sure! I told my Aunt a few colors I liked and she got me one in Teal. I wanted pink too, but guess the one she is suggesting/purchasing for me doesn't come in pink.

I need to get online and look around for books. Haven't had too much time for that lately.

And I still haven't looked into book bags or rolling ones. Lots of decisions!!

And I am the same way. I keep thinking about everything we will need and that I need to do before the holidays and I am stressing out..LOL!!!!

Have you looked for nursing shoes?

Have you looked for nursing shoes?

I haven't looked for nursing shoes at all yet. Does it have to be a certain brand or can it be just plain white Nikes or something like that?

One of my best friends is a nurse and told me to definitely spend the money to get a Littman Cardiology stethoscope, so I am going to look into that one. I found a few, and I can't decide between the carribean blue or coral pink..lol. I am definitely getting it engraved with my name too, just to try to help with mix ups and such. Which one are you getting?

That's the one my Aunt is buying for me and so I am guessing mine is the carribean blue and she is going to get my name engraved on it as well!! That's the one my brother uses at work and he says its awesome!! He just told me to be sure and to not lay it down b/c he said it will be gone in a second, name or no name.LOL!!

I don't think brand matters just all white. I have looked on a few sites after reading some reviews on here from other nurses and nursing students. Everyone is so different though. Several said nurse mates and others said a Nike pair is good and then another few said a different brand. I was like why can't everyone just like one pair and make it easier on me!!!

Scrub Shopper - Nursing Scrubs & Medical Scrubs for Nurses and Uniforms - Nursing Scrubs, Nursing Uniforms & Medical Scrubs - allheart were two of the sites they recommended.

I was thinking I will be getting slipon type tennis shoes b/c I hate having to tie my shoes especially in a hurry or if I ever had to in school that would be totally annoying!
