Grrr - MCCDNP Wait list

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

Hi all!

So the MCCDNP site says "Spring capacities choice change options should become available late in September."

Well, I called today to see when they are expecting to release the choice options because it's already getting pretty late in September - they told me late OCTOBER! :banghead:

Pushing back the date and picking 2 months before nursing school starts seems a little unprepared and unorganized to me.

Specializes in Critical Care. CVICU. Adult and Peds PACU..

Well, I am bummed. I was hoping for SCC Traditional, Accelerated or PVCC and now SCC Traditional only has 40 spots, SCC Accelerated doesn't have openings for the public and PVCC only has 10 openings for the public.

I applied in June '07 and I'm getting nervous that I still might not get in.

I was hoping for Estrella, but it's not on the list...

Awe, that sucks : (

Really disappointed with the selections. Also, with one school only allowing 10 outsiders and one school not allowing any outsiders, that means the wait will be even longer. I truly believe that something needs to be done whether it be adding more programs or making all applicants, whether employees or not, wait just as everyone else has to wait. I guess my big annoyance is that there is a person in one of my classes that said they are guaranteed a spot at one of the hospital program sites because their spouse is an employee. I thought it was strictly employee only, not spouse or family, etc. May sound harsh, but just my opinion.

I was very disappointed as well and unfortunately, the two programs you mentioned with the 10 spots, and "no options" were my top choices.

Also, it does suck that spouses or direct family members get a guaranteed spot, but that's life and the hospitals are being nice enough letting us do clinicals at their hospitals - so it pretty much is their call.

It's crazy because most the girls in my Pathophysiology class were hoping to get into SCC Accelerated - I bet they didn't expect that it wouldn't be an option anymore unless you are an employee.

I know what you are saying, but I do not believe that spouses or family members are guaranteed spots (I could be wrong), but everywhere I have looked says "employees". It does not mention anything about family members. I think if that were the case, it would be easy enough for people to claim to be family members when in actuality, they are not. Now, for spouses that would be a little difficult. I mean, what do they do? Have them provide their family tree?

Wow!! Only 538 spots open and 148 of those reserved for employees or special apps. Thats more than 25%! And if you look at the waitlist status, that means most of those waiting in the 9-12 month slot won't get placed!! My time stamp is Oct 27th, 2007 which was the first of the placement week, back when you could only turn in your app during 1 week a semester if you were close to having your pre-reqs done. I'm prayin that I get placed!

your time stamp was from october 27th, the first of the week? october 27th, 2007 was a saturday...........do you mean october 22nd, 2007?

anyways, i agree that something needs to be done about the nursing wait times for the community college programs. i say instead of "weeding" out the students during the first couple blocks of the nursing program, "weed" them out during the pre reqs, before the program even starts. i think the best way to do that is to increase the minimum scores on the net test to at lease 75 % on both english and math. if someone thinks that is too hard, or demanding, i don’t see how they will ever cut it in nursing school. i think that it’s ridiculous that 60 people might get selected to start a program but only 20 to 30 remain to finish and become rns. also make the process a competitive one, similar to asu's admission process. that would also speed up the wait for students who worked hard during the pre reqs, and earned a good score towards placement.

just because the nursing program is a community college one, doesn’t mean that the students should expect lower expectations vs. a university........just less cost :)! we are all aiming at the same goal of becoming an rn whether its doing rn to bsn or just 4 years at a university, so i believe we should all be held to the same standards educationally.

glad you agree. i felt like i was going out on a limb. i do not mean to minimize the fact that employees should get some type of preferential treatment, but maybe they all do it like the bnfp where they are guaranteed an interview (or in the case where there are no interviews, maybe some type of point system). i think that they could come up with some sort of system that is not as competative as asu, but enough to weed those people out who more than likely will not be successful in the program. i think even if they bumped the grade up to a b instead of a c that you have to pass the prerequisites would be a big step. i also agree that they should probably raise the net score on each section in order to be able to apply. too bad they do not have a suggestion box or somewhere that we can take these great ideas. :)

Archer,

I just rechecked my time stamp and its actually Oct 22nd 2007 @ 8:04am. So, one of the first in that run! And I totally agree that they need to put some stricter guidelines on this super competitive program. It took me 9 years off and on to complete my pre-reqs and prepare my life for NS. I am fully ready, academically, emotionally, financially, and physically for the extreme challenge that is NS. In that time, I have seen quite of few students that make me think that they will be scary nurses, or surely won't cut it in NS. I made over 75% on both NET scores without even prepping, so I agree that those numbers need to move higher. Its not fair to make serious students wait this long, when the system is clogged with people that won't make it through or aren't serious about it. They shouldn't discount the education just because its a community college. I know that alot of the programs are on par with the university programs, and at the end we all have the same RN and almost the same amount of credits as a BSN. I know that NCLEX pass rate is important to keep these programs going, so they should be more strict on the quality of student thats admitted so they can focus giving a quality education verses spending the first block weeding people out. Also, they should add some weight to previous healthcare experience. I have a friend that just started SCC's program with no previous health care experience and had her first week of clinicals. She is totally grossed about by colostomies and "wiping asses" as she says. She refused to help move a bariatric patient because he was 600+ pounds. She wants the RN to be able to do med-spa stuff like botox injections. If she had the CNA, even if she just took the 3 week course, she would atleast have experienced some of the day to day and would have made an informed choice about being a nurse.

Plus, is anyone as frustrated as I am that there is so many employee reserved spots? I understand these hospitals let us train and this is the exchange, but 27.5% of this semesters spots are researved! Holy Cow!!

Do I come off as frustrated? I feel better now that I have vented. Its just a stressful time, we are all waiting on this placement, plus some are also waiting on ASU's letters too. Following your dream is a scarry leap of faith and I am praying for us all!!! :zzzzz

i agree with people needing to see if they actually enjoy nursing before they commit 2+ years to prereqs, and then find out they don't enjoy clinicals at hospitals. i did a nursing camp at mayo clinic in high school for a week, and that's when i really found out nursing was for me.

anyways i also am bummed about how many spots are reserved for employees of certain organizations. i think the organizations reserving spots for their employees makes total sense, but i think maricopa should have a set number of nursing spots open...say 550 just for maricopa community college students. that way any spots an organization open will be in addition to the spots that maricopa community college has. i know that this will not happen for a long time, if ever, but like you said it feels better to vent about it. yea, that suggestion box would be great.

:D

Hey AZ samantha! I am in the same exact boat as you...my timestamp is June 19 '07 and I am STILL nervous after reviewing the new program choices that I may not get in yet again! Ugh this is so stressful. :eek:Also my first choices were SCC traditional and SCC accelerated, and I think its really too bad that they aren't offering any SCC accelerated spots to the public! :(I just am really hoping to get in for Spring '09...I guess we will find out soon enough (Oct. 21-yikes!)

Good luck to you and I'm really glad I found this website today to see that I am not the only one in this unfortunate situation....but I wish none of us had to be in it at all!
