Grossed out for the first time this year

:barf02: A third grader just came to me telling me he just lost his tooth. Mouth was closed. He opens it and blood comes pouring out, followed by the WORST, most foul-smelling odor I can barely describe. Like rotting flesh, mixed with moth balls and I am not sure what else. The tooth that fell out was a primary molar, capped in silver, and the underside was completely decayed and black. I had to breathe through my mouth as I helped him because it smelled so bad. I had him rinse and spit a bunch of times until the water ran clear. I finally got a good look in there and his entire mouth is just filled with caps, fillings and visible decay . Makes me so sad. Mom called the dentist and they say he does not need to be seen if no pain, swelling or fever. No obvious signs of infection but that odor- man oh man. I feel like I can still smell it :snurse:

What has grossed you out lately?

I just had a parent tell me she " cures" her kids ear infections by pouring urine in his ear!!! Lets just say my RNF was not able to hide my shock and horror for that kid. I didnt even get around to asking who's urine was going in the kids ear. SMH!

GEEZ!! The mental images are staggering!! YUCH!

IKR. My BFF's mother was dying from cancer and her family tried anything to help her make it. So they made her drink her daughter's urine. Grr... I would prefer to die in peace without being tortured like that.

You know you're a school nurse when...

You read this entire thread while eating your lunch :)

They told me I needed a room that was at least 8 x 10 and had a sink. We don;t have that here.

That's fairly small. Are you sure you don't have a room you could use for a few hours? Maybe on a weekend or holiday?

That poor little boy, OP. He can't help the lack of adequate dental care. THAT is what sickens me, beyond whatever came out of his mouth.

This is why my 18-month-old son has already been to the dentist TWICE. And we don't give him juice, candy, foods with added sugar, milk overnight (stopped the last pre-bed bottle at age 13 months--and he never ever went to bed with a bottle, ever).

His teeth get brushed twice per day despite protests...

It's worth the extra time and effort to go for infant/toddler dentist visits. But I think many parents don't have the knowledge about pedi teeth or do not have adequate dental insurance so it doesn't get done. That isn't necessarily their fault.

Decided to make myself an Autumn treat last week--harvest "nachos" with butternut squash. Recipe called for fontina and gruyere cheeses (which were expensive, and I'm unemployed.) I've used gruyere many times for recipes, but only used Italian fontina in the past (I think it's usually Danish?)

Anyway, opened the gruyere, which was pungent, but then opened the fontina and a smell hit that immediately awakened a memory--the distinct scent of C. diff. I checked the date on the package and did a quick google search to see if it had gone bad. Turns out, it was fine and it mellowed after cooking. The final test was that my husband and son actually ate it without complaint so I figured it was fine. Apparently, something about the cheese-making process creates the smell.

No disasters, but I'll stick to Italian fontina from now on.
