Grossed out for the first time this year

:barf02: A third grader just came to me telling me he just lost his tooth. Mouth was closed. He opens it and blood comes pouring out, followed by the WORST, most foul-smelling odor I can barely describe. Like rotting flesh, mixed with moth balls and I am not sure what else. The tooth that fell out was a primary molar, capped in silver, and the underside was completely decayed and black. I had to breathe through my mouth as I helped him because it smelled so bad. I had him rinse and spit a bunch of times until the water ran clear. I finally got a good look in there and his entire mouth is just filled with caps, fillings and visible decay . Makes me so sad. Mom called the dentist and they say he does not need to be seen if no pain, swelling or fever. No obvious signs of infection but that odor- man oh man. I feel like I can still smell it :snurse:

What has grossed you out lately?

Not work related, but a skeptics podcast I listen to is investigating urine therapy.

Which is when you drink your own urine to heal your body. I have gagged.

Mouth stuff always grosses me out, though. i would not have been much help to that kid.

I'm so sorry for you and for the kid!

Can you call the dentist? In the school I worked at in GA, when the parent signed the contact card, there was a blurb about giving the school permission to communicate with the child's doctor. If you have something similar, maybe you could call the dentist and give some more detail. Also, foul odor = sign of infection in my book.

Our school has a mobile dentist that comes twice a year. Does your school have that program? If not, it may be worth looking into. They do everything from cleaning and x-rays to fillings and more.

He is actually followed closely by the dentist, which is why I had mom check in with them to see. They said the smell is the decay that was part of the original tooth that fell out. The empty socket looks like a normal one should look after a tooth falls out. Now that the tooth is gone the smell is gone- the smell was from the rotten tooth that fell out. And I would LOVE to have mobile dentist but our space is not conducive to that, unfortunately. Also, I was hoping to find FREE dental care for our students who do not have it (this kid does have insurance and regular care, just terrible teeth from poor care as a baby), but the mobile places I have called all say they only take insurance :(

Poor kid. When I was in nursing school I had a patient with gangrenous bedsores that the doctor debrieded at the bedside so I "got" to watch. I will never forget that smell.

My school uses the company in the link Bunny provided. They take insurance, medicare, and also have grant funds available. My rep has basically told me that they will qualify any kid with grant funds if necessary. What are your space limitations? They don't take up much room, they bring two chairs to my school and then they need a table. We put them in a small empty classroom or conference room.

Nothing as bad as that story. I got a good whiff of CDiff once and I can still sort of smell that....

They told me I needed a room that was at least 8 x 10 and had a sink. We don;t have that here.

Yikes! Glad he is followed by a closely by a dentist!

Different, but my cat's teeth were all rotting out of his little head (he was feral before we adopted him) and he had to have ALL his teeth pulled (for $1200!). The smell before they were pulled was awful!! Now he my toothless kitty (from the pic on last Friday's thread :) )
