Great read....

While gaining the courage to return to school for nursing, I frequently take books out from my local library regarding nursing. You may think this is crazy but I take the exam books out, test preparations, etc., anything to give me a taste of what I am getting myself into. I want to be really prepared for when the time comes. I have been out of school since getting my associates degree in 1995. I came across a book called "Nurse" and it is wonderful! Its a national bestseller and is written by Mary Benjamin and it is the true story of 8 weeks in the life of a nurse. I am so glad I have it (i actually went to Borders and bought a copy). It just gives me an inside look of the field. I suggest it for anyone who is thinking about becoming a nurse. After reading I just wanted to say "Thank You" to all you nurses, for everything you do!:heartbeat:yeah::bow:

:yeah:

" A Nurse's Story " and "The Making of a Nurse" both by Tilda Shalof are good.

Me too, me too! I thought I was the only crazy lady reading all these nursing books, nursing stories, and nursing manuals when I am nowhere near even applying to nursing school! :chuckle

I like the books by Echo Heron and "Nurses" by Marc Brown (I think it's the name of the author). "Cooked" was awesome, about a nurse in Cook County General, and "Your Career in Nursing" was a great one too.

Tell me what other books have you found?

Peace

Oh, how funny Lily, glad to have found you!!! Yes, i am a stay at home mom and dream about becoming a nurse, but haven't even started on my pre-reqs yet! There was another book i believe called Emergency but not sure. It was compiled of 50 short individual stories of nurses and some situations that touched them on the job. Can't remember the name though; either Emergency or Days in the lives of Nurses:D

yuyu,

Is this the book written in the late 70's? Just wondering if I read the same book years ago.

Ya know, I think so (you're talking about the book called "Nurse" right?).

I don't know if it was written in the 70's, but it is about a nurse who was a nurse in the 70's. she started nursing around 1975 or so. Its a great book.

I have read books by Echo Heron before I even thought that I would have a chance at being a nurse...over 15 years ago. I am considering re-purchasing her books in addition to the ones you all have listed here.

I love Echo Heron.

Nurses Story and Rusty's Story by Carol Gino are also excellent.

Her Tending Lives: Nurse's on the Medical Front is esp good.

Nurses Story came out just when I started college for my RN. I think everyone in the class read it. I can highly recommend it!

Another excellent book for my fellow Canadians is about the Sick Kid's deaths in the 80's. But I am blanking on the name - if anyone remembers the name, I'd be greatful. I am thinking it might be called the Death Shift, but I could be confusing the title with another book I've read about Genene Jones, an LPN who murdered several children - she would intentionally give them meds to cause Cardiac Arrest because she got such a high from Codes. I've read 2 books about her - Deadly medicine and the Death Shift. She is one scary woman!

Sorry - I seem to be showing some "flight of ideas" here!
