Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
If we have to do these stupid CLC assignments, then I would rather have the smallest group possible. the group I am in now is 6 people, and because I initiated topics and getting started, some dog said I should be leader. alright, you wanna play that way? This class is Health Assessment. So 3 people start posting their research like we were asked to, but only the instructor wanted us to provide in in ppt form. I bring that up and I get shot down. I turned my stuff in ppt form. Another student followed suit so we shall see what happens. Btw,, got shot down by the very girl who said I was the leader. Grrrrrrr.
So they turn it in to the leader (you) and then you have to turn the information into slides?
I just honestly never understood why everyone (other members of CLCs) makes this process so difficult and labor intensive to the "proofer/editor". Only one CLC have I ever had that ran smoothly, and you know how that went? Here:
The assignment/rubric was broken up into distinct pieces. Someone (me) uploaded a ppt template and wrote "Susie" on slides 1, 2, 3. "Johnny" on slides 4, 5, 6. "Lucy" on slides 7, 8, 9. "Prism" on title page, Intro, and Conclusion. I titled the Reference Page but otherwise left it blank. Susie, Johnny and Lucy each took that whole ppt to their computer, did THEIR slides, entered their references on the Reference Page, and when they were done with it, uploaded it back to the forum. When they were all returned to the forum, I just slid their slides over from their document over into the master document, proofed any glaring spelling/cite issues, alphabetized the references, and we were DONE. It was like magic. But no, people want to make things hard, and not listen to reason. Okay, fine, type whatever you want, in whatever format you want, go over by a million words and make some poor sucka go through it line by line, and basically make their own project out of a giant mess. Oh, and don't answer your phone on Saturday or Sunday, either, just in case I need to ASK you something!
Okay, but I'm sure it won't be the last, I still have a few more classes to go....

Call me crazy, but what part of "the Instructor wants individual students to upload their completed ppt slides to the forum" don't people understand? Do they not know s/he is reading all the communication (and opening the attachments) in the forum? :sstrs:
I guess I'm just a goody-two-shoes, I do whatever my boss/instructor tells me to do.
I like raises, and I like A's.
...whenever I ask for group input - like "what opinion are we taking as a group on this 550 point ethical dilemma?"
I'm laughing because no one in my group has posed that question yet. Perhaps they haven't read the whole assignment? The part that says we need to come together as a group and propose one united recommendation for the ethical dilemma? Don't we need to discuss this at some point? What if JimBob feels the exact opposite and is adamantly against the general consensus (if we had one, that is)? Oh, the fireworks that lay ahead. Either that, or they all think this paper is just going to write itself.
To make it easy, I am completely willing to have whatever opinion I need to have to get this over with!
Prism - on my last CLC for Research we did our powerpoint exactly like you described (my brilliant idea ) and we got 100%. No drama!
For my Family CLC we are outlining slides/speaker notes and one awesome person volunteered to put the powerpoint together.
Tomorrow I have to write my 250 word portion of Ethics CLC part 1, write the 200 point paper that is due Sunday, and write the Heritage assessment for Family.
BTW - for Family my instructor just had some family emergency and hasn't answered my questions. For the Heritage assessment paper, do we write on the 3 families we interviewed, 1 of the 3 families, or families in general? The assignment guideline is worded weird and I am confused.

Well, though sad for you, I'm a little relieved that other people have trouble deciphering the intent of some of the assignment descriptions. I thought it was me.
For the Heritage paper, I used that provided questionnaire tool (link in assignment) to interview 3 families (mine being one). I described the origination of and purpose for such a tool, then described each of the 3 families. Then a comparison of the 3 & how they either did or did not fit into the tool as expected. Then a blurb about why tools like it can help guide a nurse in their practice to individualize care.
For these assignments that make no sense to me, I've found that if I "hit on" each sentence in the assignment description AND each block in the rubric, all is well in the end. Honestly, the coordination, organization of topic points and layout of the paper is always what takes me the longest - not the content of the paper itself (`cause obviously I can blab on about stuff forever) LOL

noooo, there is another student that said he wanted his job to be in charge of the power point and everyone give him the research we did and he would put the ppt together. I am fine with that but the instructions by the instructor say, " post your slides to the forum for feedback by your peers". She goes on to say that she can tell how much effort was put into their part by the quality of their slides. so I pointed this out and they said, "I think I will just do what "ppt guy" wants us to do.

One of the problems I've seen with the CLCs is that I can't really see where or how the instructor has the opportunity to "dock" individual students for their lack of participation. I'm sure it's possible, and likely happens, but there's nowhere on the rubric that addresses group collaboration. It would be good if the project itself wasn't graded as a whole project, but rather each student got their own rubric and was graded on their individual contribution. Isn't that the concept that we're trying to learn? Not how one unlucky person can spit out a final product on a Sunday, but how well we all play in the sandbox together and collaborate as a team to produce an end result? Maybe I'm missing the point. But alas, since the rubric is for the PowerPoint itself, if it turns out well, all 6 people get an A. (and I'm sure they have figured this out, which is why some people defy certain cumbersome directives - how would the Instr reduce their individual grade?)
They promise you access to the premium papers IF you submit yours. It's not always the case though. GCU sent an email months ago warning those that used those sites could be sent packing.
Someone actually used one of those sites in their references....I'm thinking that noise I heard soon after was the professor dropping her score SMH!!!!!!!!

Well, I guess their grade will show just that, when the instructor to goes looking for their part and it's not there...sucks to be them.

We had one MIA person that we turned into the instructor for her lack of participation. The instructor said that she was going to have her grade show her lack of attendance.

All I write is "Hello, my name is Prism, I work M-F, 8-5 but cell phone is always with me so feel free to contact either by email or text, here's my # (***)123-4567"
...and someone always says.... "Hi Prism! Thanks for taking the lead on this! Let me know what part you need me to do, I'm up for anything!" :angthts: and then miraculously, the remaining 4 people that have been lurking/absent for 2 weeks all chime in within 2 minutes flat saying "Yeah! Thanks!" :flmngmd:
They lay in wait for the first dodo to post "hi", and POOOOF, YOU'RE LEADER!
