Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Flames, do you know when they started the Capstone as 10 weeks? I started at GCU 6 months ago and knew it was a 10 week capstone, but it seems like lots of people that graduated this year were still part of the 5 week.

I do not...I recall reading about it on 1 of the 2 GCU threads here...but one would have to go back and search.......

I want to say early 2017 the 10 week capstone started..Im probably incorrect though

I also started my Capstone on 8/21! And as well was severely frustrated with the ISP and have no idea if I did it correctly or not. The instructor was really not much help and really has not directly answered any questions I have had for her so far.

I started the capstone on 8/21. I just received my ISP grade and it is 15/25! They did respond with an example and said if we make the necessary changes they will change the grade.

I'm also curious as to what the journal entries look like. We haven't received a response but our instructor is saying each entry is 5 paragraphs? That's ludicrous. I feel we are placing more work on documenting and organizing what we are doing than on the actual paper we will be eventually handing in.

Is anyone having better luck with this 10 week capstone instructions?

Nada. This class has got to be the most unorganized I've ever seen with the most abstract, open-ended instructions assignment-wise.

What day did you start your capstone? I started mine 8/21, are we in the same class? I have a 4.0 so far after doubling up on everything and I am totally lost as to what is expected. I turned in the ISP but it probably wasn't done correctly. I don't get the scholarly activity and the journal entries. At this point, praying just to pass.

I Like Letters, I received your message but am unable to reply because of my few forum posts. I created a closed facebook group that anyone who is currently taking Capstone can join so we can talk more. "GCU Capstone 8/21"

In regards to the journal entries - the final journal is turned in at the end of the class. What I did is at the end of each week I would explain what I did that week, if I had an interesting case/experience, and relate each entry to one or more of the 10 subjects you need to address (new practice approaches, the role of technology in improving health care outcomes, population health concerns, etc). If you keep up on it each week it is much easier to manage. The scholarly activity that I chose was attending an 8hr trauma conference.

Midnightspecialist, I would not wait too long before choosing your project and formulating your PICOT as this is the basis for all of your research time.

Best of luck - the 10 week Capstone did have some challenges.

But the journal entries have to relate to the capstone paper correct? I was thinking it was whatever I thought about and did towards my research. It seems like the capstone is not only the research paper, but all these other things that are not really directly related to the final paper, just a bunch of other things?

I spoke to my instructor today and feel much better. She said the journal entries are just reflective over what we've learned in researching the capstone. So if you're doing sepsis, talk about the sepsis bundles that are becoming prevalent and the research behind them. She was really great, and very open to further communication so I told her I'd likely be calling her again since right now it made sense but might not next week :)

That's great to know! My instructor has been no help at all and the questions I have asked her, she has given me these random, abstract responses that make no sense to the question I've asked her. -_-

Agreed, it is confusing. You can have the journal entries "loosely" tie back in to your project. The instructor I had explained that the journal entries can cover your Capstone experience - not just the project. It felt like (to me) that there were no specific parameters on what the journal entries covered. I just included if I had an interesting case, how I collaborated with other departments (this could also tie-in to your project), how I used community health and/or the nursing process, etc. The Capstone is about more than just the research project, because really the research paper is much shorter than what was required in the previous 5 week class.

If you are in doubt, then try to confirm if the journal entries need to tie-in directly with your research project.

Hope this helps some.

My instructor has supported me and even helped me to hone in on my topic of choice. I am asking for their feedback but I feel confident about the topic they suggested as it is something I am interested and concerned about.

If that is what the journal entries are, that takes a huge load off my mind. I was thinking of sending my instructor one of my entries to see if that is along the lines of what they are looking for. I feel a little better about this. I am also going to revise the ISP form and send it to the instructor for review before a final submission.

You are right, I noticed the final paper is incredibly short. But I guess by the time we form the paper we should have a greater understanding of the issue we chose and the major points to hit to keep it concise and strong.

My instructor still has yet to grade my ISP...so odd cuz I had her for a different class and I had no problems with her, really.

So this week's assignment says kind of towards the bottom, "You are required to retrieve and assess a minimum of 8 peer-reviewed articles. Plan your time accordingly to complete this assignment." Does that mean the 8 articles are included in this assignment or is that just a reminder that we should be gathering our research? It's a 750 word paper max... Also, there's no rubric to click on like I've had in assignments for other classes??
