Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

My instructor still has yet to grade my ISP...so odd cuz I had her for a different class and I had no problems with her, really.

So this week's assignment says kind of towards the bottom, "You are required to retrieve and assess a minimum of 8 peer-reviewed articles. Plan your time accordingly to complete this assignment." Does that mean the 8 articles are included in this assignment or is that just a reminder that we should be gathering our research? It's a 750 word paper max... Also, there's no rubric to click on like I've had in assignments for other classes??

Those 8+ research articles are the ones that you will be using/referencing in your final paper. If I recall correctly you write a short review of each article for this assignment. Those 750 words go by quick so be aware of your word count. Some instructors are more lenient than others when is comes to going over the word count so make sure you know how your instructor feels/grades

This isn't the literature review paper. This is just the "Capstone Project Topic Selection and Approval" paper, so I wasn't sure if all 8 references had to be used in this paper as it is just a paper to "describe your proposed capstone project topic".

I'm also confused, the assignment has 6 number items to reference in the paper. I'm not sure how 8 articles play into a 500-750 word count essay.

I got this assignment confused with the lit review. I believe on this assignment I just had a paragraph in the paper that stated something like "Several studies will be used to support this conclusion" and then (in parentheses as if an in text citation) I listed the 9 studies that I was going to use throughout the research paper. You can then list these on your reference page at the end of the paper. It seems like the Capstone class is pretty fluid from one class to another, so the assignment may be slightly different between classes as they tweak the class. I do not remember what the 6 items were specifically, but if they were in the rubric I would use them as headings for each section of your paper. Hope this helps some.

In collaboration with your approved course mentor, you will identify a specific evidence-based practice proposal topic for the capstone project. Consider the clinical environment in which you are currently working or have recently worked. The capstone project topic can be a clinical practice problem, an organizational issue, a quality improvement suggestion, a leadership initiative, or an educational need appropriate to your area of interest as well as your practice immersion (practicum) setting. Examples of the integration of community health, leadership, and an EBP can be found on the "Educational and Community-Based Programs" page of the Healthy People 2020 website.

Write a 500-750 word description of your proposed capstone project topic. Make sure to include the following:

1. The problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need that will be the focus of the project

2. The setting or context in which the problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need can be observed.

3. A description providing a high level of detail regarding the problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need.

4. Impact of the problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need on the work environment, the quality of care provided by staff, and patient outcomes.

5. Significance of the problem, issue, suggestion, initiative, or educational need and its implications to nursing.

6. A proposed solution to the identified project topic

You are required to retrieve and assess a minimum of 8 peer-reviewed articles. Plan your time accordingly to complete this assignment.

Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.

This does help some, thanks! :)

I just started GCU's capstone course this week and I've already been in tears trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing lol. I have written to my instructor and waiting for her clarification on the practice immersion hours. From reading prior posts here, the clinical site is just supposed to be a sort of reference point?? Are we supposed to be attending meetings/seminars at the site or trying to actually implement some sort of policy? Am I correct that the capstone project itself is just a research paper rather than actually implementing that research into practice?

I think the paper/research is geared towards something in relation to the site we choose. It is research, but then we are also supposed to come up with deliverables (possible things to do to improve the issue), and or solutions to the issue. For example, I'm doing mine on nurse satisfaction in hospitals are more important than patient satisfaction, and the organization should acknowledge it and implement things to make it so because of xyz benefits.

At least thats the gist that I'm getting and my instructor so far is implying that or outright writing it is that.

You are correct that the capstone project is a research paper on an area/topic that you see needs improvement or modification. It can address an existing policy or a new policy and does not need to actually be implemented, but it could be if your facility/site would like to use it. The practice immersion hours is the time spent researching, writing, editing, etc. your paper. This does not necessarily include meetings or seminars unless they pertain to your project. I know we could not include the time spent with your mentor as immersion hours. The newer capstone format is a work in progress so there has been a lot of confusion with assignments. Hopefully you have an instructor that is quick to respond to questions. Mine was awesome and a lot of help.

Best of luck.

has anyone here gone through the process of site approval between GCU and your site of choice for the capstone course?

I am being told that this process could take 6 MONTHS! (I've already been waiting for one month)

We can't pass the course without site affiliation...

6 Months? There is a letter your advisor can send you that basically says you have non affiliated access to the hospital education resources and a place for them to sign. That is all and can be done in 5 minutes. That being said many hospitals will not sign it, which has become a hug issue and one that I am currently dealing with. When I started this program last October none of this existed and if I would have know back then I would have gone somewhere else! I only have 2 classes left now.

sounds like a nightmare...hopefully it gets sorted out soon.
