Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

has anyone here gone through the process of site approval between GCU and your site of choice for the capstone course?

I am being told that this process could take 6 MONTHS! (I've already been waiting for one month)

We can't pass the course without site affiliation...

It didn't take that long for me. From the time I sent in all my information, it took about a week to get clearance. Mine was part of an approved network, though.

I'm just starting my Capstone this week and am trying to figure out how these practice immersion hours work. Has anyone just counted their time spent working on assignments? The instructions are so vague, I'm not sure what they expect me to do for 100 hours (my site also does not have its affiliation in place, so I don't have a site to actually go to).

For my immersion hours I counted the time spent researching and writing about my project, as well as time spent on assignments. The bulk of the immersion hours that I logged where spent on my project. I would usually log about 12 hours of time per week. It was my understanding that you could not count any time spent meeting with your mentor.

did you start the course without a site approval? they told me it can be done, but also stated that you can NOT pass without a site affiliation.. You can do hours off site according to them, and you have to basically meet with the instructor "off site"

6 Months? There is a letter your advisor can send you that basically says you have non affiliated access to the hospital education resources and a place for them to sign. That is all and can be done in 5 minutes. That being said many hospitals will not sign it, which has become a hug issue and one that I am currently dealing with. When I started this program last October none of this existed and if I would have know back then I would have gone somewhere else! I only have 2 classes left now.

that is what they told me as well.. I am not getting a response from the site and it has been about a week now... I have been waiting for my capstone to start for almost 2 months now

I don't start my capstone until January but was trying to get everything done prior so I don't have that problem. Having them sign a non affiliation agreement does not make sense and my education department does not understand why a paper saying they agree to a non affiliation and needs to be signed, especially since we will not be doing clinics. No one at GCU can give me a good answer.

Yes, I started the course without site approval. They had my information for a few weeks prior to the start of the class. My mentor did have to send them an email that stated that I had approval to continue with my Capstone project while waiting final site approval. It was not a form letter, but and email.

i have been getting vague answers as well... the bottom line is this (as far as i understand):

-you need 100 hours of work on your project (research hours)- this can be done at home

-almost all if not all of the hours can be done without a site (at home, and you meet your mentor "off site" like at a starbucks)

-you must have the affiliation agreement in place before the end of the course

thank you, im considering starting my capstone this way too.. or at least starting the course just to glimpse the assignements and drop if i have to until site approval.. only issue is that it'd show up on the transcript until i retake the course.

So I'm struggling with my literature review based on the unclear instructions as per usual. For anyone who has done this, did you have sections comparing all of the 8 articles and basically list off their info, or did you have a different paragraph for each article?

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

  1. Title page
  2. Introduction section
  3. A comparison of research questions
  4. A comparison of sample populations
  5. A comparison of the limitations of the study
  6. A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research

is this what the first assignment looks like in the capstone class?
