Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

OK, I have definitely been spending plenty of hours of my capstone assignments. Then what is the point of the mentor/ clinical site? What do they expect us to do at a clinical site that we cant do at home for the project?

so in the new 10 week capstone class..u actually have to go and meet face to face with ur mentor???? What does this mentor do? Glad I did the old 5 week class, as I wasnt even in the USA when I did it. We had to have someone look at our paper...but that was it...they didnt even have to give you any guidance on it.....just noted on a form who saw it and their credentials/contact info. Good luck, soon it will be over....

The purpose of the mentor is to offer guidance and suggestions with your project, and as a sounding board and someone else to bounce ideas off of. In my opinion the purpose of the clinical site is to offer insight and experience to help support, or in some cases help you clarify or alter you project purpose through the experiences you have at your site. As you have stated, the bulk of your research is likely done off site. As another purpose for the clinical site would be to show that, according to BSN requirements, a clinical site is used in the program - just a thought.

Best of luck.

Hi everyone! I am in the last week of spiritual and ethics, which I found to be the hardest class! Much worse then Stats. I'm sure it would have been more enjoyable with a better instructor. It would take him 10 days to grade papers. Only 3 classes left with nursing management next. Any advice on good instructors for that class?

Hello, NurseConnie33,

Would you happen to still have that list of instructors to avoid? I would love to have have it.

Greatly appreciated!

I deleted my copy of the prof list.....I dont think it was overly helpful.... I believe some profs were put on it just because they didn't pass out A's. I had 1 from the lsit and she was fine. She did grade a tad bit different, but she left helpful feedback.....GL

I never saw a list of instructors to avoid. I did not really have any trouble with the instructors I had. Maybe I was just lucky. Getting feedback was faster with some than with others. I really liked my Capstone instructor and would be happy to share his name with anyone if they want to private message me.

What is the class #? I had a good experience with pretty much all my instructors, currently in the Capstone. Some were more particular than others (like on APA format) but they normally articulated it in the DQs so by the time a paper was due you could incorporate that feedback for the A.

I just started my 10 week capstone and the ISP form is driving us nuts. Our instructor says put in the domain from the appendix A in the column, but what does that even mean? what do these domains mean for the assignments due each week? I did ask for an example but I don't think the instructor has seen my request yet. Also the mention of objectives, I dont know what that exactly means either, I feel like all the objectives are being worked on simultaneously. I'm not one that works with a set plan, I start my work and it develops and evolves as I go along. It's hard, but I'm not one that is good at planning and such.

Also I work on a medical surgical unit, with just about a year of RN experience. My nurse education coordinator at my hospital suggested I could do my capstone on nurse roundings on the unit, but my GCU instructor says this wouldn't be a strong capstone. In truth, I am not trying to implement a resounding change, as I feel most things on our unit are up to date based on current evidence-based practices. Essentially I would be reaffirming its use and importance. I am not sure really what to do this on because from my point of view and with limited experience, I feel as if our hospital is meeting current EBP requirements as much as they can with their resources.

What day did you start your capstone? I started mine 8/21, are we in the same class? I have a 4.0 so far after doubling up on everything and I am totally lost as to what is expected. I turned in the ISP but it probably wasn't done correctly. I don't get the scholarly activity and the journal entries. At this point, praying just to pass.

There is a few people on here that have completed the new 10 week capstone class..hopefully they will chime in.....sure sounds like they have complicated things..sorry

Flames, do you know when they started the Capstone as 10 weeks? I started at GCU 6 months ago and knew it was a 10 week capstone, but it seems like lots of people that graduated this year were still part of the 5 week.
