Grand Canyon University RN to BSN Reviews

Nursing Students School Programs Nursing Q/A

Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.

Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.

Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.

Hi 4mranch,

Thank you for your direction, it is much clear. Am I supposed to submit all 10 weeks ISP or submit it weekly? And thanks for your advice, I will try to do the scholarly activity on the week that do not have assignment.

Hi kobe. During the first week, we were required to submit the ISP completed except for the columns with the number of hours, the self-assessment, and the date assignment completed (those could be completed for the first week only). We did not submit the final completion until the 10th week.

Hi 4mranch,

Thank you for your information. I am glad that only 9 weeks left. The instructor has not grade any DQ or assignment yet. Will see. I am working on the Capstone project topic,Thanks again.

Hello everyone!

1. I was wondering how online RN-BSN GCU graduates are doing after graduation? Is anyone having issues getting their BSN "recognized"? Has anyone had any issues getting into MSN, NP programs? I'm in California btw.

2. I'm currently taking PHI-413V. Can I/Should I double up on the following classes? (Except for capstone of course).

AMP-450V Leadership and Vocation

NRS-440V Trends and Issues in Today's Health Care

NRS-410V Pathophysiology and Nursing Management

3. Capstone sounds like a lot of work from what I've read in these forums. My nursing research instructor advised that we keep our entire process on Quan, Qual and benchmark papers to help with capstone. Does it help?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Im in Maryland..was abroad when I did my BSN...When I came back I did a nurse refresher class. Went to 2 interviews and had 2 job offers......In my opinion most places do not care where 1 gets their BSN completed....was never brought up in my 2 interviews

Amp 450 is a super easy class.....I was in no hurry to complete the RN to BSN program, so I'm not a good source of info on doubling up,lol I found all the classes except for Capstone could be doubled up. Capstone has changed since I graduated as well....now 10 weeks and totally different, there are a few posts on allnurses regarding the new class format. Good luck

I have not had any issues with my employer recognizing my BSN from GCU. I also have 2 coworkers that went through GCU, also with no issues.

I am with Flames on the doubling up of classes. My schedule just did not allow me to feel comfortable doing that, so I took all the classes individually.

With the Capstone you will need 8 peer reviewed articles for you paper. Yes, they do need to be either qualitative or quantitative research articles. Choose your project wisely - meaning do not choose a research subject that you will have difficulty finding adequate research references, otherwise you are just shooting yourself in the foot (so to speak).

Good luck with the program. I feel it was worth it. I did learn a lot. You will get out of it what you put into it.

No problem for me, because I'm grandfathered in. However, future GCU grads in WA will have to be IN the program now to be grandfathered in. Any future BSN wanna be's will not be recognized. Why? because the GCU BSN program does not have a practicum. WA has always been on the strict side, but still, it's annoying when I hear how "easy" the program is and their capstone maxed at 5 pages, according to my co-workers. And yet, their degree is accepted.

On a good note, the GCU MSN IS recognized and if I had money to burn, was younger and had a need for my MSN, I'd probably go that route.

I took 440 and 410 together, no problem.

Hi!

I am in my capstone course now and the guidelines for what is approved as immersion hours is unclear. I currently work as an RN. I have been meeting with my mentor but I heard that does not count? My teacher is no help.

Only been a few students post o nthe new Capstone class i nthe 2 main GCU threads here, hopefully they can assist you. If you have contacted the prof and no answer, then politley ask your advisor for guidance. I would also post in thje open forum as well (no tmentioning the prof was useles, lol) Most profs I had were fine, but some I felt were just their for the pay check and didnt really have much to offer.

Sounds like 1 prof was condused as well: Cookies Must Be Allowed - Igloo

Hi Chrissybear. I just finished the capstone class in July. Immersion hours are the hours you spend working on you project and assignments such as research time, writing time, etc. It does not include the time spent with your mentor. I would usually log 12+ hours each week.

Hope this helps some.
