Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
As well some profs enforce the DQ response rule..2 responses in 1 day for them to count...if u just post one a day, you will not get credit for that reply, nor can u just do all 6 replies in a single day.....but some profs do not care! The DQ replies by most student tend to be...u are so right.....i totally agree with you...u are awesome.....well not exactly like that, but add very little substance, lol And then u had the posters which plagarized..good times
Capstone can actually be 1 of the more interesting classes as YOU get to pick the topic. Yes it is a lot of work, but each week feeds off the previous....and in week 5, ur mainly copy/pasting it into the format (example is given, showing where each weeks work goes) One still has to pretty it up so it flows well. The key to a successful capstone paper is 1) finding a topic u enjoy 2) making sure its a topic that information can be found 3) obtaining the 15 articles ahead of time (8 have to be research based) 4) Having ur PICOT ready
Dont be afraid to use the librarians for resource help (that goes for all the classes) I found emailing them was the best as they would email u back plenty of resources.
1 reason why having ur 15 articles ahead of time is useful...u have a rapid review of them due the first week..then a more entailed one due at end of week 2.
Think my Capstone was around 40 pages...many of that was the reviews and reference pages
Up until Capstone...many of the classes have the same flow....so its like groundhog day over and over, lol Write DQs..respond to DQs..write paper! Most classes have a group project (CLC) and they are usually a PowerPoint. Try and keep all dialogue in the Colour forums..as the prof can see the communication that takes place....
Hi Old Dog. I had a teaching assistant in one of my preovious clases with GCU. I believe it was the health assessment class. Not sure if she did any of the grading, but she was involved in the DQ responses and posted questions herself. Did not seem to effect the flow of the class at all.
Im assuming DQ= discussion board? do responses have to be APA format? or can they just be thought out short paragraphs? Im about to start the program... hopefully next week if i get all my transfer credits in on time!

DQ (Discussion Questions) if it was based on my experience..I did not reference it....but if I took any part of it from an article, yes I did reference it (APA format) And always in my own words....I didnt notice it at first as I really did not pay much attention to other peoples DQs, and glad I didn't as some just copy/pasted stuff....School needs to do something better than DQs or just assign different DQs to each person..as most are the same old blah blah, and the responses are even worse, lol But on the bright side, they are easy to whip out!! Good luck
Hi everyone,
I am getting ready to start my Health Assessment course but nervous about the instructor. Anyone have an opinion about who to avoid?
Thanks
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. My TA seems to be grading all my work and I am getting killed in grading! Funny I've completed 12 classes receiving A 's in all of them and now suddenly I'm stupid and should "proof read my work and seek help from the writing center" . Really as if I don't proof read , I have used the school template for every assignment and have not received such negative comments as I have in the past 4 weeks. I keep telling myself 1 week left . It's not affecting the flow of the class just the flow of my desire to participate in the class!
Every class that I have taken over the past 14 months has required the student to have a journal article with the initial DQ1 or DQ2 post with ( in cite) citations.
My health assessment class was very enjoyable had a very interactive instructor!

Most weeks 1 paper is due on Sunday at midnight..BUT sometimes u may have 2 papers due....or near the end of the class it could be a paper and ur group project!
2 DQs.....1 due Wed at midnight....the other fri at Midnight!
APA strictness? Some profs yes..some no..so it varies!
PERRLA is a lifesaver!
Grou pprojects? Can be very easy if u have a good group.....but can be a nightmare if u get slackers or people that are not team players.....I took the lead=, just to get the ball rolling as in most cases, no 1 wants to lead, so nothing gets done right away! I got the ball rolling ASAP!
Hard program? If ur a strong writer/researcher, u can really breeze through the program. 1 is not reinventing the wheel.....u get the assignment..research the info and in ur own words spit it out,lol
Their is instructions..BUT ensure u go by the RUBRIC....as sometimes not all the info is in the instructions...go by the rubric!!
Best of luck
