Members are discussing the accreditation and acceptance of BSN and MSN degrees from GCU in different states, particularly focusing on the requirement of a preceptorship for BSN programs. There are concerns about certain states not accepting GCU BSN degrees, while others share experiences with the capstone course and offer tips for scholarly activities. Additionally, there is mention of GCU transitioning back to a non-profit status and the impact of this change on students.
Howdy all, I bit the bullet and after much research, I decided on Grand Canyon! Wow, I did not expect BSN schools to be like used car salesmen--hounding me by emails and phone calls. Rather impressed on how Grand Canyon sort of left me alone, but at the same time kept in touch.
Commence my first class Sept 30th, excited, yet very nervous, as I'm not a big fan of school, LOL! I did extremely well on my Associate degree, graduated back in 2009 from Northern Virginia Community College. We shall see.
Would love to hear from past and present Grand Canyon RN to BSN students.
Alright, I'm joining in on the thread! Hello everyone! I finally committed myself to GCU's RN-BSN program. I have just a few more questions- I don't need stats but I need a filler course and was interested in taking one of the 'get college credit'. Does anyone have any suggestion on which UL exams are not too difficult? Also- I've heard about some sort of discount or grant in the winter? Anyway- Professional Dynamics starts on November 10th!
Welcome drea588! Um I would suggest if you have to take a filler course to take something that your are interested in. I have not heard of the get college credit, nor do I have any info on any UL exams so I am no help. I was told that one use to get a discount for being an ANA member but this is no longer true. Who do you have for professional Dynamics? I had a great instructor that I can PM you with. Oh do not post any instructors name on the forum, PM me.
Hi JRich, I know it's been a while for you I'm in community heath now, I'm having a hard time researching information for the CLC on community health assessment pattern. Where do you find information about a community's elimination, nutrition patterns? Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Mcas, sorry I am no help I my portion of the assignment was the key findings. Did you try the states human services website?
Not JRich, but most of us here have done this ppt, so hopefully a few more will chime in. For the Nurtition part, our team went with the nutritional status of the community - like the obesity rate, the rate of nutrition-related diseases (rise in Type II DM in the past decade?), availability of discount food programs with support services (food pantries, etc.), healthy food choices in school lunches, etc. Just basically what is the overall nutritional status of the community and what (if anything) is the community doing about it?Ahhhh, the Elimination slide.... LOL. I wasn't tasked with this on my team because I couldn't figure out if they wanted to know the eliminaton patterns of the residents (?!) or the elimination patterns of the town (again, ?!) The person who did this slide focused more on the environmental health concerns of the town, and hit on points such as the sewage system, water treatment plants, mosquito-fogging in the summer, pollution, etc. Not sure that exactly fit what they were asking for but we got a great grade overall. Honestly, Google is your pal for this one, just keep typing in stuff and see what pops up:
Nutritional status of Acornsville. Obesity rates in Acornsville. Food pantries in Acornsville. School lunch program in Acornsville. You get the idea, eventually you will stumble across the info you need. I remember city-data.com being helpful for my part but can't remember what all else that site offers. Good luck!
Ours was a paper, but yep, exactly what Prism said. U.S census, Acornville.com as well, and Google what restaurants they have in town compared to food co-op, or other healthful eating. Our city was in NY (well over 2000 away from me) and I had the nutrition part. The city was saturated with fast food versus healthy living food places and the rate of heart disease was the highest in the county. Go figure. Once you start delving into that the city has by Googling, the links will eventually help you find what you need.
I had to laugh at the elimination thing. One CLC member called the city planner and asked how many public toilets there were in the city. They didn't even have a clue, lol, so the CLC person put that in the paper!
Late Januaryyyyyyyyyyy :anbd: waiting...waiting...
It will be here soooooooooon!!!!!!! :anpom: :anpom: :anpom:

One question... Are you an athlete? From what I saw on the nightly news a few days back if you are an athlete then some programs have a class for you that you don't have to show up for and someone writes your single midterm paper for you. Seems like that will work for me right now. I can't don't want to finish my paper this week!
Sorry, besides that I have nothing. I just wanted to say Hi-Low...
Thanks for all the leads, I have somewhere to start
Good luck. It is a pretty hefty assignment, but I learned a lot in this class. :)

Well if they went to a for profit school located in the canyon, where everyone knows your name and gets an A, they wouldn't have to have someone write their papers, :hhmth:
Prism- A welcome was actually very helpful! Thank you! Seriously AN was insanely helpful when starting my nursing program originally and then now has proved very helpful with figuring out where to go for RN-BSN. Where are you in the program? If you have any suggestions on instructors to avoid or take i'll gladly accept. Also- what should I expect in this first course and how do I make an A? I'm working full time and moving onto nights during that time so i'm a little worried about the time commitment i'll need to make.
Hey drea,
Not Prism (isn't it great how we just butt into the convo? ) but I can help with some of these questions. You can make an "A" by answering all the DQ and making sure you answer everyone for a total of six through the week. I always added a lot more just to pad the forum and some of the conversations were very interesting. Turn your papers in on time and know your APA.
***TIP*** Always check the forum the day before (at least) and READ THE ANNOUNCEMENTS. Always do this...always...always. Check for crazy APA rules or crazy instructor vibes. If you see this and you feel uncomfortable, DO NOT POST. Call your advisor and switch.
The first class has a paper on the IOM/BSN 2020, a group power point on a nursing theorist and another I can't remember. I lost the first class in the crashing of my computer.
I really believe they use this class as an introduction to the CLC, LoudCloud and the gist of the program. The grading doesn't seem to be too harsh in the first class. In my opinion the program becomes increasingly paper heavy and it's like a roller coaster, lol. The second class has more assignments and it sort of ramps until the fourth class and then it seems to plateau on the busy-ness of the program. Either that or we have become paper writing machines :dzed:
The program was designed around nurses who work full time and *I* was told I would spend approx. 10-12 hours a week on homework. I knew right away that I was going to spend A LOT more time and I was correct. I think I averaged about 15-20 per week yet I work FT and then some with committee work and such. I also have five children currently at home and a husband that has occasional health issues.
You will see a decrease in your social life, but hey, it's worth it. :grad:

Yikes, I'm no help but I hope someone pops out of the woodworks to help you. Have you asked your advisor?
GCU used to give a discount if you were a member of the ANA, but I hear it's gone. Maybe they replaced it with what you mention.
