Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

Good idea. Will do that for sure!

I hope you also mention your thoughts on the workload

Oh yes I know the assignment well :bluecry1:, but I was wondering specifically about the part of the CLC where someone has to do the interview(s). The way I read the rubric and the assignment was that whomever did the interview could choose either a CH provider or a PH provider and just submit ONE interview. The way my instructor interpreted that slash between the Community Health/Public Health Provider was an AND (instead of an OR), which meant I ended up doing TWO separate interviews with two different people. I always thought a slash meant "or", but she disagreed LOL. Made me do two interviews :banghead:. Doesn't sound like a big deal until you're faced with trying to find a second person with a different specialty (at the last minute), arrange a time, conduct the interview, document all their answers, then compile it into the PowerPoint. In the end both of my people did have very different perspectives so I got a lot of great info, but it just irked me because I know that other classes only had to interview one person ((pity-party :grumpy:))

I didn't know we were going to be doing interviews and teaching presentations etc within the community  I was told by the enrollment counselor that everything was online. I asked specifically to make sure there weren't proctored exams etc. because I don't have childcare for my kids. I recently moved and don't even know where I would begin looking in order to complete these assignments. I think these assignments are great but I am disappointed that I was told everything would be done from my home computer.

I hear you, sometimes I think the advisors are the last to know. I'm constantly telling mine things and she responds, "Really?" As far as the interview, just don't pick that piece of the CLC, let somebody else do it - especially if the community chosen by the CLC isn't where you live, it would not even be practical for you to take on that task since the interview is based on a CH/PH provider in THAT community. If the CLC ends up being on your local community and you DO get stuck with the interview, you could ask someone at work (I can't remember, do you work in a hospital?), there are typically social workers on every unit and they are a WEALTH of knowledge about community issues. Oh I got u know. Yes you can do either or. I just know because on of my classmates asked out teacher this question. Bummer that you had to so the extra work.

I use Pandora's advisor who seems to know what is going on in the world of GCU. They must have just revamped this particular class because just 8 months ago, it was not like this.

I agree with Prism. Let someone else drive the community train and let them choose their city. That way you don't have too. I do like the idea of going to a school and doing some small spiel there. Bring food and you will have an appreciative audience.

Otherwise, unless the courses have changed a lot, this should be your only community project.

Thank you for the tips, I'm not currently working or involved in anything yet so I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it I guess. Those are great suggestions though for teaching with kids! What about the capstone? Does anyone know if that is all research and writing your capstone or are you doing things in a facility?

No, it is all writing. In fact, start thinking about your Capstone and what you want to write about. When you get to research, you can actually start researching in that particular class and write your PICO which will be reviewed by the instructor. I was going to write on CHF and have changed it. Otherwise, I would have had 5 articles out of the 8 mandatory research and 5 closer to the total 14 we need (or something close to that).

I'm nervous about this PICO only because of what you just said - it's in preparation for the Capstone. It's good to know you can change your Cap idea, that you're not locked into anything, but I definitely would like to utilize this Research class (coming up in 2 wks) and get the feedback and critique from the instructor, and be kind of on my way to the Cap. However, I have noooo idea what I want to do it on. It's kind of like picking your major when you're a brand new freshman, how do you have any idea that early/in advance? At this point, unless I come up with something stellar in the next 2 weeks, it looks like I'll just be going through the paces of theory and research writing itself in my class rather than being able to actually get started. I've done some reading on Capstones in general (not sure why I keep capitalizing that, maybe because it's such a big deal in my head!! lol), and it really should be done on something based out of your workplace or that you're really familiar with, and as of yet I'm just stuck.

Familiar would be better, IMO, just because it's easier to blab on and on about something you know about, lol. I was going to to do CHF as mentioned, because I have helped design a CHF protocol from hospital dc to doctor clinic. However, I found it really dry, and it's not my passion. Compassion fatigue and burnout are two things I totally can write upon forever....BUT.... now I need to redesign my bloody PICO and this is my stumbling block. I need to design the question on what I want to write about. I think it will look something like this:

Will nurses, who suffer from burnout or compassion fatigue, benefit from therapeutic intervention?

You guys take research and let me know if I'm on the right track!

Specializes in NICU.

I had to search and see what I did for my PICO question in the research class.

"In hospitalized preterm neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), how does kangaroo care, compared with no kangaroo care, affect maternal infant bonding and neonatal health status? "

tokmomare you in research now?
