Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?
Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?
I was soo nervous about stats and have posted a lot of information in this thread about it, and so has Pandora. It's not THE typical stats class where you figure out long formulas though they do want you to be very familiar with them. It's more of learning to read statistical research and having to tell the prof why you got the answer to why 27% of all blood pressures are significant and what it means to the research project.
The book is worthless. It's essentially a workbook that you only use for the test. I had four other stats books, one for dummies, idiot, the gcu book and the best was for healthcare professionals. I also read ahead of time, so I was familiar with the lingo. That saved my hiney more than anything.
The DQ's are interesting. You talk about how you got your answers. I mean how much can you chit chat about a statistical equation?
Of course in our class (Pandora and I were together), there were others that were quick to tell you your DQ was wrong, and a Chai square was NOT this, but THAT...blah...blah...blah...I got to the point I never even read everyone's response and replied to the minimum.
Khan Academy is where GCU wants you to go and learn, and it's ok for some stuff, but Google was my best friend. I would Google until I found a video that made sense to me. One worksheet of 10 questions would take me 5 hours, but I pulled an A in that class.
Oh, you will have to deal with some Excel, so make sure you have it on your computer and are comfortable using it. Our GCU instructor literally walked us through most of the questions and answers and then let us figure out some of them on our own. It was probably the most fun I had in stats, lol. I have seen other instructors not be so helpful, so as I said, be comfortable with Excel. Some of the videos are on Youtube, so look them up. One instructors name is Tina and she has her videos on there.
Access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week--as long as you have internet connection!!
You can see the whole syllabus, so for the most part you can work ahead, BUT you can't submit anything early! Well I never tried to submit a paper early, so maybe you could.....but Discussion questions you can't, and you have to be active so much in the Discussion question forum--two posts a day for at least 3 days out of the 7.
No real "webinar" Ur not watching/listening to a prof. Most of it is reading. Yes a fair # of papers!
I havent yet--but I am able to test out of 2 classes--1 of them is the substance abuse. GCU sent me a link, where one can see the syllabus and a few examples of tests questions, didn't look to hard.
Yes I know exactly what you're talking about. I was told that the nurses commonly test out of Here's To Your Health, which seems basic enough for RNs. Testing out of 2 classes would be great! Would shave 10 weeks and a couple grand off of schooling. Waiting to hear more info as far as test costs and such, will keep you posted
I love to read all you guys tread here about GCU RN BSNhow the class is running? you can access the class 24/7? is the webinar online class? I heard there are a lot of papers to turn in, but no quiz/test. I am getting very nervous to start
So far so good. Everyone has been very helpful and professional. Before looking into GCU I didn't know much about it, I thought it was another typical online degree type school like UOP. It's not, its actually very respectable University and I'm proud of where I've chosen to go .
The program is a lot more affordable than I had assumed it to be, and doesn't take very long to finish. I have no second thoughts about the school, as of yet, but I encourage you to do your homework before starting anywhere
here is the info I was given:
Here is the link to the DSST site and the two courses you might be interested in are Here’s to Your Health (page 41) and Substance Abuse (page 90): http://getcollegecredit.com/assets/pdf/DSST_Test_Taker_Bulletin.pdf
After reviewing these you can head to the main DSST site:

You're lucky! The info for the class was interesting, but the group project and final project I could have done without.
