Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Nursing Students Online Learning

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

I will be starting the program oct 7 and my first class is Professional Dynamics. Any advice on how to be successful in this class? I am a little freaking out of going back to school again. I graduated in May with my ADN and thought I will be out of school for a long time (I think I was traumatized by nursing school), but here I go again. I always had a hard time writing papers, so I am afraid of how I will do on this program. Advice?

I start this Monday!! ouch!!! First week does not look so bad, and yeppers a group project right off the bat, good times, lol I suck at papers, so I'm expecting a rough go at the beginning, but like anything else, the more you do it, the better (hopefully) you will get at it. Best of luck

Is thus the capstone project class ? I can't remember what the name of that class's. If it is then there isn't a group project!

No. Research is just that. Research and there is a group power point and a smaller project due on the last week. The research class preps you for the capstone though. I just wrapped up research last week.

Professional dynamics will be your easiest class homework wise. There will be classes with two projects due on the same day. The pace stays that way, so you get used to it after a first few classes. But don't think Prof Dynamics is as difficult as it is going to get!!

As for paper writing gikg..you will do fine if you know APA. I hadn't been in school in over 20 years and figured it out, lol. I had a recent co-worker/student who gave me one one of her papers to use as a template. I also had her edit my first few papers.

I did invest in both PEERLA and Grammarly that helped with my paper writing. Just a thought. :)

Good luck to all of you. The best advice I can give is to not get behind. If you work ahead you can get a few days to coast before the next class starts, lol.

There were people in my classes who could barely write discussion questions responses in English, and passed. I'm not sure how they passed but they did. And as another person said, get the PERRLA program to help you with your APA format!

Some people find things easier than others. I noticed in the freebie introduction course for all online students, that some really struggled with proper English. Living in Nicaragua, and trying to learn Spanish, I realize those students are probably very Intelligent, as it takes a great deal of effort to learn another language, then have the guts to participate in online discussion groups. They have to put a lot more effort into their studies. I'm just hoping I can get back into the study/paper mode, lol I so do not like school!!! lol

I agree. My first post did not come out as I would have liked it to sound. I will admit that I did have an issue with this because of grading. I felt that I was getting points taken off for things that these other students who used English as a second language did not. There is one class where you have to peer review a research paper, correct it and make suggestions. I happened to get an ESL student. While I encourage everyone to study and continue their education, I also feel that everyone should be graded the same way. If I get points taken off for poor grammar so should everyone else regardless of their native language. I hope this is not coming off the wrong way. Another way of looking at it is, if these students had planned on continuing on to a Masters program and needed to take the GRE the likelihood of them passing is most likely not good, therefore GCU has failed them in preparation.

Yes I do see your point in that everyone should be graded the same! Both my sisters back in Canada are RN's and 1 of their biggest peeve is foreign nurses that can barely speak English! They appear to be great Rn's but have a very difficult time communication with other staff, and patients.

What class is this where you have to critique?

You will see quite a few of ESL people in your classes. They do seem to be quite intelligent, but they struggle with English. Many are hard workers though and really do try their best. There hasn't been one that has slacked off in my group project yet.

I'm guessing if you help them out--they gladly return the favor!! Just like on the floor--teamwork! Of course that is in a perfect world, lol

IMO, I wouldn't call it a cake walk. Is it mind boggling difficult? No, it's not. Again, just my opinion, it's theory and what is so difficult about theory? :)

Anyway, I have learned something in every single one of my classes and much has been interesting.
