Does anyone on the board work at Grady? If so, what are the working conditions like, and do you have an Inpatient psych unit?
Thanks!:)

Unless you enjoy being understaffed, unappreciated, and unpaid....steer clear of Grady.
Thanks for your input. I think I will stay away from Grady. I'm not a glutton for punishment.:chuckle

It truly depends on what you are looking for... I was surprised to see so many negative comments. I know of many people who have worked at Grady and are or have been very happy with their experience there.
For new graduates Grady pay scale is same as accross the metro atlanta. It is located in downtown Atlanta. They serve vulnarable populations and have many high-risk patients. However, if you are looking to learn and gain experience, it is fantastic! They also have one of the best new graduate orientation programs and really wonderful lab where you can learn your skills. You also will see things there that you will not see anywhere else. That is why grady nurses are in such a high demend. 1-2 years of Grady experience and any employer would love to have you!!!
I am considering Grady for myself. However, I will not know for sure until I interview with all potential employers.

The only people who believe that are Grady nurses. No offense intended, I did my undergrad clinicals there and I worked there a couple of times. Grady is not as unique as people often think. Yes they have a higher proportion of homeless and indigent folks' there than anywhere else but make no mistake about it, those same people are out in the burbs too just in smaller numbers.
If you want to work in trauma or burns, then Grady really is the place to work and learn. Otherwise, they don't offer anything unique that you won't find at a smaller hospital. And for that matter, they are no more understaffed or underpaid or underappreciated than anywhere else either.
My biggest beef with Grady has nothing to do with the patients or the staff or the pay but with the hospital itself. It is huge and very inefficient in many ways. You can literally spend 10 minutes waiting for an elevator at certain times of the day and that makes so many other things about it slow like getting things from the pharmacy or central supply which is waaaaay in the basement. They have runners and things but honestly, there are times when you need to get things done in a hurry and it is very difficult to do there. It's also difficult to get a good bathroom which is a big issue for me.

hey i want to know myself about Grady Hospital, it has been years since i have been there, use to live there many years ago probably back in 1993-4 i attended Grady high school. I have though about moving back there when i graduate from nursing school and also considering other places. all i know is I want to move away from Mississippi. Grady hospital put me in mind of UMC here in Mississippi, it is good for experience b/c you see and learn everything but it is one of the worst place you can work.
p.s. this does not have anything to do with anything but if anyone reads this message and knows anyone that attended Grady High school in 1993-4 or around that time please PM me and lets talk b/c i am looking for someone that attended school with me and has lost touch. i moved back to mississippi .so please anyone with info of this time can PM me anytime

I really want to work at Grady as my first job after graduation. It is my first choice, mainly because I feel I can get more experience. Students that I know who are in the same LPN program as myself and have done their clinicals at Grady seem to be more clinically advanced than I and my classmates. I agree though with the poster who said you can get the same type experience at other hospitals around the area, but perhaps not as much quantity.

Hi, I have worked at Grady in the Emergency Room as a traveler. But as of January 2009, they stopped all travelers and agency nurses, to cut down cost. I was just offered a job in the MICU starting on the 3rd of August. And as far as how is the working environment, when I was there previously, it was very busy, never a boring moment. You did the best you could with the supplies you have or could find. I have been told by a co-worker of mine that things have really changed for the better. But it all depends on what you are looking for in a hospital setting. I have worked at majority hospitals here in Atlanta, as a traveler, and Grady is the hospital that I chose to go back to. I wish you the best.

Hi, I will be moving to Atlanta in a few months, I will be visiting the area next month. I am looking to live in Smyrna. I have heard good things about Northside, Emory, Piedmont, and St. Joseph. I am too and ER RN of 4 years, so if you dont mind can you give me a little insight on these hospitals, what I can expect in pay, and the commute to any of these hospitals from Smyrna.
Thank you in advance.
