:) PLEASE RESPOND. THANK YOU. :D

Hello, again.

Please I am asking everyone that comes by, to please please please respond to this message and not just read it and then go on by. Please do respond to it. Thank you so much.

What is your grading scale for the nursing program that you are attending right now, or will be attending in the future, or already attended [if it has been 1 yr or 30 yrs or more, does not matter]. I want to know and need to know. Thank you.

The reason why I am wanting this information is because the nursing program that I am attending right now, the grading scale is as follow: 93 to 100 = A

86 to 92 = B

80 to 85 = C

74 to 79 = D

73 or below = F

Yes, I want to compare our grading scale and yes I am getting up a petition to take to the President of my college to have the grading scale changed for the nursing program.

I have talked to several nursing students who goes to several other colleges and their grading scale is on a 10 point grading scale...meaning, 90 to 100 = A; 70 - 79 = C -- Passing.

So please, don't just read this message and not respond to it. I would love to hear from you thank you.

And also, the nursing program that I am going through is an ADN program, 2 years.

We have 4 levels that we have to proceed through.

And believe me, none of them [the Levels], prepares you for the following level(s). But each instructors in the following level(s) expects you to come in there knowing it all.

Also, thank you for stopping by and reading the other message I have posted ["Will I ever become a Nurse..."]. Your encouaging words and support means so much to me during this time of my life. Thank you.

A friend of mine in an LPN program said that her school is raising their standards to 78 next semester, anything below that is failing. She also said that the RN program is being raised to 80.

she said this is because of the programs pass/fail rates for the boards, evidently the nursing program got a major awakening last year by some higher ups.

Anyway, her school is not that far from Ivy Tech, maybe an hour or so, one student plans to transfer there.

TS,

The ADN program that I graduated from used an even tighter grading scale that yours: 94-100=A, 87-93=B, 80-86=C, 73-79=D, below 73=F. It was scary, at first, having such a strict scale. But after the first semester it wasn't nearly as intimidating. Since I knew that the grading would be tough, I made sure I knew my stuff! Ultimately, I believe that helped me pass my boards.

Good Studying!

The college that I attended also had a 7 point scale for grades. This scale was for the entire school.....not just Nursing. Anything below a "C" was failing for the Nursing program.

Peter... at least you knew your stuff, huh! Boy, I'm not sure I'd make it through that scale.

My school's scale is:

90-100 A

80-89 B

75-79 C

Must make a C or better to pass.

I live by this quote:

"When you come to the edge of all the light you know and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly." Author Unknown

Loved your quote !

 :)

I am also in an ADN program and our grading scale is

A 90-100

B 82-89

C 74-81

D failing anything below 74

not as strict as yours but I dont exactly understand the grading scale

Mkue,

That's frigging hilariouse!!!

Instead of changing the curriculum to give the students a better preparation for the NCLEX, they simply only allow the top of each class the eligibility to take it. The top students will just naturally do well on the exam and Badaboom.....Badabing.....100% pass rate.

I would interview some students and ask if they feel that the curriculum has merit, or is just a bunch of fluff, or outdated. It sounds as if they're skewing the pass rates to me.

Truthseeker, I was out of the office yesterday, sorry for the delay in answering your questions. I can understand your frustrations.

If I read your post correctly, students received 3 percentage points and were allowed to progress to level 4. That's a big jump. Have you talked to the Dean/Director of your program? That is where I would start.

If you do not get to enroll in level 4 I would look into the college grievance procedure. That way you could recevie a fair and impartial hearing.

Good luck!

:)

grading scale:

for nursing classes:

a=90-100

b=83-89

c=78-82

no need to worry about anthing below that.

nothing below a c allowed in any required support class. the rest of the college went by 90,80,70, except for a&p 1&2, 92,84, & 76.

nursing grade is from tests only. one point per question, doesn't matter if it's a quiz question, test or final. say there are 1,000 total questions for the semester, you would need 900 points for the a and at least 780 to pass the course.

care plans, reports, required computer time all included in pass/fail clinical grade.

calculation test can miss 3 out of 25.

so if you fail clinical or calc test you are out.

if you drop or fail you are allowed to reapply to the program one more time.

Pama, Thank you for responding back to me on what I should do concerning Level 3 receiving 3 points.

No I haven't spoken to the Dean of my college, because when I found out this information, everyone in the nursing department and the college had already gone for the Christmas/New Year Holiday. On January 2, is when everyone will be back.

Have another question to ask you, if you do not mind responding back? I sure would appreciate it so much if you would.

I received a letter from the chairperson of the nursing department, telling me that they could not tell me at this time if I will be readmitted back into Level 4 and the reason being because of not having enough faculty for Level 4.

When I was at my college last, Friday, the 14th, I was told by the secretary of the nursing department that they hired two new faculty members. On top of that, there are already 3 instructors for Level 4 plus they are getting a Level 2 instructor to help with a clinical evening rotation which will only be for 22 days.

What I want to know can they make me sit out a semester because of lack of faculty members? And why this came about is because of the 3 points that Level 3 students received to their final grade.

Now I do know that two of the 12 that will be repeating level 4, got letters telling them that they will be starting classes on January 7, 2002.

Yes that is half of the class that will be repeating level 4 for the Fall 2001.

Thank you again for responding back to my message. I will keep you posted.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year :)

Truth,

We had the same scale as you and as much as I didn't like it, I understood it then and understand it much more now that I am practicing. Only difference was that the school I attended only taught each class once/year, so if you failed you had to sit out a whole year. I failed OB with a 71 and had to sit out a whole year. It was terribly frustrating, but it gave me a chance to finish up some other classes so that I was able to focus all efforts on only nursing classes when I returned.

I think the reason for the higher scales is for the purposes of state boards. The other students do not have to take the NCLEX, so how they are scored is of no relation to how nursing students are scored. A nursing school's reputation is based on their NCLEX pass rate, so it should be the individual school's right to set their own standards as long as they are equal for each nursing student.

I always had the attitude that if ONE student could pass or maintain a 4.0, then it is possible for ALL students to do so. My inability to score high enough was no fault of the school, but of my own.

However, if the 3 percentage point to level 3 is new, then you may have a case...but I doubt it.

Good luck!

I just wanted to say that our ADN program grading scale is as follows:

93-100 A

84-92.9 B

78-83.9 C

anything below a 78 means that you fail the class and it has to be repeated. Also on our skills tests we have 2 chances to pass them or we are out of the program.
