Grades in nursing school

Published

Do the grades you get in nursing school really matter nowadays? Once we graduate do employers ask us what kind of grades we got in nursing school?

Man that sucks, I really hate it that because I am not the best student it is going to count against me. When I graduate I will probably have a 2.5 GPA, I really hope they look at more then just grades as a new grad or I will be screwed...

I am curious about this as according to the school I go to anything below an 88% is failing and if you fail any of your classes you're out. Are the rules different per school/state?

100-95% is a A

94-88 is a B

I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide on this!

WOW I have never seen a school not accept lower then an 88. I think an 80% is the highest minimum I have seen. What school is this?

My school is 94%-100% A, 85%-93% is a B and 77%-84% is a C.

Here is a problem I saw in our program.

From the beginning a lot of students took on the C gets degrees mentality, only need a 77% to pass. They were getting close to this, then come the last few tests they found they had a very small margin of points they could miss to pass the program.

I set out striving to want to do better and I started off doing well, when I ended up bombing a test it wasn't a deal breaker for me because I still had plenty of leeway point wise.

So if you have the mentality that you only need the minimum to pass, it can really come back to bite you in the orifice.

Louisiana Technical College I was really surprised when they announced it at orientation. I have been trying to get a head start on pharm by reading several of the suggest books from here. Hoping I manage to pull it off :)

I bet, that is a really tough standard, most schools it's C or above. Seems like you are off to a good start though :)

Yowser! That's a tough scale! The only ones I have memorized for my school is:

95-100% A

92 - 94% A-

88 - 91% B+ (I think?)

This is what my grading scale is at school. I dont know WHAT I would do if we were held to 88 or out standards. We would have lots more room, thats for sure :(

I know for SURE what you are talking about. I had the flu last semester and missed a test. I had two dr notes and instructors that backed up how sick I was. I had a test though that I was unable to take and had to accept a "0". BUT, because I had awesome test scores up until that time, I still made a high b after finals.

I still get irritated. Even the dr said if he found out that I went to school or clinicals, he would make sure I got in trouble at the school. I dont understand why I would not be allowed to take the test. I want honors when I graduate. I want the awesome grades to be proud of... grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!:angryfire:loveya:

I think they do count. Because if you go into the program just thinking it doesn't matter what grade I get as long as I pass, you may be hurting how much you learn as well. Think about it if you study for a test just to the point you know you can pass with at lest a C are you really taking in the information to retain in down the road in your career. On the other hand if you study as much as possible hoping for an A on the test you will take in much more information that can be valuable to you.

I think u should always strive for the best. I agree with the previous post as well, its important that u learn as much as possible so that u could be a good nurse. :yeah:

wow-that is certainly high...we have to pass or drug caculations with a 90% or higher or you will not get to go on(that is about halfway thru the first semester)then the over all grade is just a 70% or higher(ya know just the normal 70-79 C,80-89 B, etc.)....Last semester no one got over a 89% in the first semester...and if you have a 69.9% you do not pass....no rounding up....Yes, you should try to keep your grades high because you never know what will be thrown at you like the other poster who was ill and couldn't take her test(by the way, that really sucks and I feel for you, so unfair) Of course, try to get good grades, and it will help on the NECLEX..anyways, thank goodness the semesters over, and I get to go on to the next level of nursing school...Good luck everyone!

We have the dosage calc exam every semester as well. You have to get 100% and get 3 tries to take it. We took it at the end of first semester then will be the beginning of each semester after that.

No employers do not ask. But, if you have any thoughts of going on for your masters then you should care.

I have been hearing more and more that employers are starting to ask because of the field being so saturated. It is certainly making me want to step up my game more from hearing that.
