Grades don't matter!

That irks me to no end! I've read so many posts on here where people state that "your grades don't matter!" Are you kidding me?

I bust my butt to get A's. I think my grades reflect my work ethic and my willingness to learn. I am not content etching by as average. I do not want an average nurse caring for me. I do not want to be an average nurse caring for others. I want to be the best nurse that I can be, and I hope that others that currently don't think likewise drop the mantra that a C is good enough. Even if an employer may not look at your transcript, those grades should still "matter."

This is already being done and has been done for years. At graduation it is announced they are graduating with honors. Do they not do this where you are from?

No they didn't do that for us we all graduated in one large group.

I have to agree with Dinith88. I am a C nurse and I am damn proud of all of the Cs I made. I think it is snobbish and arrogant of you who were capable of making As in school to believe that those who made Cs were not working for them just as hard as you have been working to get your As.

I would also like to share a story with you. My friend, who was capable of making As, and I both got jobs on telemetry floors when we graduated. It was a different hospitals, but the hospitals were very similar. (Both known in the area as heart hospitals. Both about 500 bed capacity.) Six weeks into orientation she got fired because "she couldn't keep up." While I believe that where she was working was also an unsupportive environment, I also know that some of the issues she caused herself because she was focused on facts and not the patients or what needed to be done. I am 2 weeks away from completing my 12 week orientation and I have gotten nothing but praise from my managers, my preceptor, and other seasoned nurses on the floor. I believe it is simply because I am comfortable with the fact that I will not know all the things I need know. I potray an intrest in learning all I can and try to let them know that I will continue to increase my knowledge as fast and efficently as I can.

Nursing school is not set up in a way for you to even believe that those who make Cs are not understanding the information. I am a hands on learner; I'm also very visual. Books, especially ones with trillions of tiny words, are not excatly the best way for me to recieve information. I did very well in all of my clinicals, my lab demonstrations and verbal recalls, and on all the simulation patients, but none of these counted as a numerical grade to be counted as part of my score. Either you passed them or you failed them, and I can tell you that I was far more confident in those things than others who passed.

In short I think you and those who agree with you are snobs. You are the nurses who judge others before you have really given them a chance. You have little compassion for those who are learning and give them no credit for trying their hardest just because you could do better. You are the people that "eat their young". Just because I got a C in my classes does not mean that I do not understand that people's lives are in my hands and that I have to think hard and be careful with every move I make. You make me nervous because you think you're smart. An abunace of self confidence in this industry will kill someone.

You can be proud of your As, but don't hate on me because I'm proud of my Cs.

Some of you need to chill out getting so worked up over "who did/did not make an A or a C". We are adults here! Seesh.

Where did that come from? All the poster was saying is that they are proud of their grades just as much as the ones who get straight A's brag about theirs. Maybe the poster busted their butt to get C's and felt like people were coming down on them for "etching by and getting C's". I personally think this topic is best suited for high school kids!!

I am compassionate and open-minded. I don't down people who are struggeling to get by just because I am doing better. I was always happy for my friend who did better in school than me and she never made stupid comments about the fact that my grades showed that I was trying to be an "average" nurse. I don't want to be an average nurse; I was trying just as hard as she was. She was just able to get it faster than me. I pinned her at her ceremony and she pinned me. We supported each other through school despite our difference in grades. I can't understand how many people have blogged about how thier grades should be held more important or that they "worked hard" for them, like those who made Cs didn't work at all. Nursing school is hard folks. I was proud to pass, and I was proud of my friends who passed with flying colors. However, if your attitude is that you were working harder than me because you got better grades, I'm not being judgemental when I say that you are arogant. Explain to me how you know you worked harder than me for your A's.

They practice with 4 years of EXCELLENT grades then three years of pass fail then 3-8 of their version of clinicals.

So 7 years of school. 4 judged by grades, 3 by pass/fail then 3-8 years of residency then they practice solo.

An LPN does 1-2 years and ADN does 2-however long it takes and a BSN does 4-5ish...

Apples and oranges.

I do think the conversation has moved passed grades. It's the age old regular student vs good student brawl now... Well some of it was in any case...

Agreed, and the discussion is going nowhere since people aren't grasping a very simple concept..:banghead:Do grades matter all of the time? Nope. But, they do matter in certain circumstances. If anyone thinks otherwise, they are going to get a rude awakening when/if they want to apply to a competitive program. I've applied to several BSN programs, and all have wanted you to have a GPA well above 3.0 to even be considered.

I think most of the "good students" have acknowledged that they wanted good grades for their own benefit. That's fine if someone is happy with their C's...but personally, I knew I was capable of more. I set the bar high for myself. I think all people were asking for is for the tolerance to go both ways.

Nobody is disputing that some C students work hard-I think most people's issues arise from the C students that very obviously DON'T try hard. They came into class late everyday, goofed off instead of taking notes, and didn't bother to do any work for clinicals the next day. These were always the people that would get frustrated because other people were doing well.

You can get all A's and still have lots of fun in the meantime. Ace the test on the weekday, party hardy on the weekend. I manage it.

I didn't get straight A's throughout nursing school. I didn't get straight C's either. I busted my butt and did the very best that I could. I got some A's, some B's, and yes, even some C's.

Does that mean I'm "just an average nurse"? Does that not make me qualified enough?

No.

I'm a damn good nurse, even though I got a C while in nursing school.

To each their own.

That's what matters...C student..A student...whatever...If you are a great nurse and you know what your are doing when it comes to that patient...That is what matters...

How many employers look at college transcripts when they hire you? Just a question....

Well I can't remember what I got in College. The only thing that mattered was that I became a registered nurse and what I have learnt since qualifying.
