Grades- do instructors round up?

Hi =)

I was just wondering if instructors will generally round up to the nearest whole number when it comes to grades? In our nursing student handbook, it only states that 95-100% is an A, 93-94% is an A- and so on....so if I got a 94.7% in a class....is that an A- cause it is below 95%, or is it an A because it should be rounded up? Final grades aren't posted yet, and i would kind of like to know....and yes I know I'm a nerd ;-)

That would be rounded up at my school I anything .05 is. but every school is different

Well, since they've posted the grading scale to two significant figures then I fail to see how they can look at the score in anything but two significant figures... after all, this is supposed to be a data-driven science, right? That said, they can pretty well do whatever they want and each instructor decided for themselves.

Ambiguous grading scales kinda bite.

Oh Please ! If my nurse got 75 % all through NS... Who cares ?! If 75 % means that she's " mastered" the course then so be it. As long as she's competent and caring, who cares about whether she scored A's in B's in nursing school. C nurses ARE nurses too.

If I'm sick in the hospital I don't want a snobby A/B nurse taking care of me.

FYI- I'm 3.0 student and proud of it baby.

If someone gets 75% all through nursing school it means they are a mediocre student and caregiver. In no situation would a 75% be considered "mastering" anything, I do not understand your statement.

I would much prefer a brilliant snob taking care of me over a mediocre sweetheart. I am sure you would feel the same if your mother was in the hospital.

Please, 75% means they mastered the material. In my classes, most the C students slack off all semeter and then worry about maintaining their C at the end. I know of at least 4 students who had to make a 90 on the med-surg final to have a 79.5 to pass. Because my school rounds up, this is an 80. This is not mastering the material, this is doing just enough to get by. I am like some of the others on here, if they come in my room in the hospital they are going to go back out very fast.

like in any realistic situation you would know your nurses grades, the hospitals don't even care about your grades, just that you got license and piece of paper.

In my school there is no rounding. 80 to pass.....79.99 is a failing grade.

BTW, aside from the ones that "goof off" and cram to get a passing grade on the final (90% to get their 79.5)... I have 2 things to say... (1) if a person got a 90+ on a final, then they did learn the material for the course to score that high. (2) not all "C" students would be goof offs....Although I am not a "C" student, I work FT, go to school FT and have 4 kids (16-23) at home. (Oh and 1 dog and 2 puppies!) That is a lot for one person's plate. Some may get "A"s with this schedule :D or some may get "C"s. Once they are working as a nurse, they aren't as full and may focus on the patient as they should.

I think many students ASSUME they know what is going on in another student's situation when they don't.

BTW, I am 47. My mom is a retired nurse (74 yo), my sis (49) is a nurse and my brother (45) is a nurse. Funny thing....no one has ever asked (1) what their GPA was or (2) whether they had an ASN,BSN or MSN! The nurse is the one who walks in, introduces her/himself and then takes care of you!

so those who make As and Bs are snobby? How does that make any sense?

but you are right, C students can and will be nurses too. Everyone sits for the same NCLEX. However, I just dont understand the mentality to do enough just to get by/just do the bare minimum. It seriously speaks volumes about your motivation and drive.

i was speaking specifically about the students in my class. i do not want them taking care of me or anyone in my family, because i know what kind of nurse they are going to be.

Again, I was talking about some of the students in my class. And no they did not make a 90 on the final. They were no where close to 90, so they did not learn the material. I also am going to school full time and have a family and work full time, so I know about full plates. But, I also take the time to study and learn what I am supposed to. These people brag about having so much free time because they are not studying. They thought the could come to class and listen to the lecture and pass the tests. I also had clinicals with these people and the CI was having to spend so much time with them because they were so unprepared that the rest of us felt like we were being neglected. OH, the failed clinicals too.

I am not saying that a patient is going to ask me what my GPA is. The experienced nurses at the hospital where we had clinicals at, told us they can always tell who barely passed and who actually knew what they where doing.

Please, 75% means they mastered the material.

75 at my school is failing, im pretty sure its the same at most schools. please explain how one can master and fail something at the same time?

Well, I hate to bust your little bubble..but (at most schools) C DOES equal RN, and there is really nothing you can do about that now is there? :yeah:

Nope, but I will never celebrate or embrace mediocrity like you seemingly have.
