Grade confusion. Help pls.

Published

Hi, Im new here and Im really confused about this situation.

I took my Human Anatomy pre-req at a CC and finals finished on 12/09/15. Its been ~4 days now and theres been no update on my final grade/final exam grade on my blackboard portal account.

The problem is when I log into my school's portal it shows my grade for the semester as an F.

When I check my grade on blackboard my grade isn't an F, its a mid C. (was hoping the final would push me over to a B). Now I know my grade can't go from a C to an F unless I just plain didn't show up for the final exam.

I tried emailing professor and of course he's out of his office till February.

I contacted a lab classmate and she had her grade updated with finals and all within 2 days after our final.

Should I wait longer for an update or take it up with the school cause there's a huge grade discrepancy? Advice please.

*Additional note: My final exam grade on Bb isn't updated, it says "upcoming".. which implies it's yet to be graded.

and WTH did he enter your grade as an F??? Did he mention why?

Go up the chain. Go to the dean of the school, not biology. This needs to be resolved immediately. At the very least the grade for the class changed to an "I" (incomplete) until they figure out what to do about your lost exam.

You know what I would do while waiting? I would study the material again just in case you are forced to retake the final. It would be a shame if that were the case and you did not take advantage of the opportunity to have extra time to study and improve on whatever you did the first time around. Good luck.

He said the F was because on his syllabus he "expressly" states that a final exam "no-shows" are automatic F's in the class. Hence to imply that I "didn't show up". And since final grades were submitted, I think, it's already all in the system. He's so quick to give F's apparently.

I'm saving all these emails and I keep contact with a lab buddy.

I simply can't understand how he or the TA(Who I had handed the scantron over to because he reached for it to collect it when I was at the professor's desk to turn in my finished exam.) loses and can't find a 100 question sheet of a scantron with my name on it, lab day&time and subject fields filled in.

I dislike the fact that he expresses his email like he wants to take his sweet time looking for it, its MY grade and MY career. Time is not something that I have because my spring '16 semester registration date has come up so I can't continue my pre-reqs with Human Physio. Effectively ruining the education plan my counselor had set out for me to apply to nursing school in the Fall of 2016.

*Thank you everyone for the comments and input, this situation is rare and new to me. I wouldn't know how to navigate this issue, all I want is fair grading of whatever I earned for the course.

Also since this was a paper exam that was used to answer the questions for the scantron he should be able to find both the paper test and the scantron.

Well get the lab buddy's statement and while your memory is fresh, right down EVERYTHING you remember from this class, and I mean everything. Anything he said, did, drink, wear. How many times he went to the bathroom. Whatever! You need to show beyond a shadow of a doubt you were there. I think you should start tonight gathering other student's statements, the more the better. If it comes to it, you could even call your cell phone company for them to issue a letter stating where your phone was connected to at the time (assuming your school has Wi-Fi)

Can you contact the TA? Make the email very neutral: "Hi Mr. X. I was in class for the exam the other day and you took my scantron. Professor P misplaced my test and wanted me to just hand in some solid proof I was there that day. Since you took my test, I was hoping you could vouch for my presence that day. Thank you, Jane Doe".

YOU NEED TO ESCALATE THIS NOW THEN. No one is in the building then?? Someone is checking their email. You need to send the professor a maturely worded email that says " Dear Professor X: I understand with holidays things are busy. But with my nursing school applications coming up, I do need to have my final grade turned in in order to continue with my pre-reqs. Would you mind, if possible, to check for my test in the morning? It could be the difference between me getting in or having to wait another year. Thank you so much!". Be sugary sweet. This will come into your benefit when you complain about him later. If he refuses, send another professionally worded but short email that your going to have to escalate this issue beyond him. you pay good money for this education, if he is unwilling to make good on the service you paid for, you have every right to take it to the next level. You need to call every number for student assistant/guidance counselor/secretory whoever to get this going before your application date.

Hopefully that formatted right. You just have to be thorough here and think one step ahead. Some professors think they are untouchable when it comes to student complaints and for the most part they are, clearly he is one of them. He needs to be reprimanded for this behavior and you need to be your own strong advocate, finding every resource possible to get your valid concerns heard.

All the Exam questions were the same version.

The way we turned the exams in at the end was he had like 4 separate piles for each lab day(m/t/w/f labs), and one other pile for the exam questions paper.

Scantrons were to be put face down, for obvious reasons of no one seeing the scantron answers and stuff written on them. I had stood near the table for maybe 5 seconds putting the exam questions down on their place and then looking for where to put my scantron. Thats when the TA reached out to my scantron since he was collecting them from the heaps of people showing up to turn in their stuff too.

First, Sorry if im reply-spammy or not using this correctly

Second- I have begun writing down the events and such, going to be tracking down or contacting some lab classmates I know of. I wasn't exactly a social butterfly during the course, unfortunately so I didn't have much friends there, maybe like one or two people but that's all I can go on account of. In any case Trying to get all these things together should I need them in the future for reference, proof, etc. Thanks for all the help again!

I'm so sorry you're going through this! I'd be livid. I mean, I know mistakes happen. I'd be upset because of this mistake, but it's the professor's response that would push me towards livid.

I absolutely 100% agree that this needs resolved NOW, not later. Definitely write down EVERYTHING you remember from that day. I echo whoever suggested emailing the TA. The TA could play an important role in all of this; perhaps vouch for your presence and maybe even possibly may know what could've happened to your final. Regardless, definitely save everything (though I'm sure you're very aware lol).

Even if you only know a few people, maybe those few people know other people and are still in contact with them that can at least vouch for your presence. The more people that can vouch for your presence, the better, especially if you have people who aren't your friends vouching for you.

I'm praying that you can get this resolved ASAP. Please go through the chains of command if it comes down to it. Please keep us posted on how this goes. Thinking of you!

I had the same thing happen to me with my Statistics final last fall! My professor lost my exam, could not find it, I had to retake the exam!

I would be furious. I would also attempt to contact the TA

Since the TA physically took the scantron answer sheet from you, i would say there in lies the problem. your answer sheet is probably nestled in amongst those other things the TA was collecting...hopefully those things were not destined for shredder.
