From your experience what was your gpa before entering nursing school be specific. I want to know if it was a uni or CC
over here in NY the suny schools and CCs are highly competitive i might just end up in a private school because i cant afford to stand still while others are getting degrees
I'm in NY too, in Rochester. I went to SUNY Geneseo for my first BA degree and now I'm at Monroe Community College for my nursing degree. Like I said it's ALL based on your quality points to get accepted there. So the better your grades in the "pre req" classes, the more likely that you'll get in. So they don't actually take you GPA into consideration there; you could have all A's in basket weaving and stress management which would bump your GPA; so they don't care about the GPA, just the pre-req grades.
I also applied (and got accepted) to GCC (genesee community college) and they had a much easier process and didn't have a point system. They did however consider GPA but I don't think they considered the none pre=-req classes. A friend of mine is about to enter her last semester there, and her GPA going into the program was in the low-mid 3. range. Do you have a low GPA now?
Yes it is competitive around here to get into the SUNY schools or CC's for nursing, BUT it's actually not really as hard as people think if you a) have all the pre-req's done and B) got A's and B's in them! A lot of people apply without having any of the pre-req's done and then cry that it's hard to get in. The key is the pre-reqs!
ETA: Oh and the private schools around here were the same way with the pre-reqs. You have to have them done. And they were a lot more money to boot!
I am in a community college and the lowest we can have in order to be up for selection is a 2.75 in all pre-reqs - although everyone around my college is mouthing that you have to have a 3.7 to even be considered or to stand out. I currently have a 3.77, so I'm aiming for A's in these last two pre-reqs that I have this semester to surpass a 3.8 to be a bit more safe and to have higher odds before selection.
My nursing pre-reqs? 3.81
Currently in nursing school. It's a vocational/diploma school. I have, oh, excuse me...*ahem*...HAD an 'A' composite avg.
*laugh*
I'm embarassed to say that Fundamentals is wiping me out, man! I have not mastered the art of thinking like a nurse, yet.
QUESTION --> 'If a pt has a walk order and experiences weakness when walking, how would I assist him to void.'
Hmm...
ANSWER --> Well, that's what a bedpan's for. He ain't fallin' out on this little student nurse! Just pop HOB up to a Fowler. Then, give him a wetnap and his call-light. I can always do ROM.
Less work for the pt; less work for me. A total win-win.
WRONG!
*laugh*
Apparently, if there's an order for amb, I have to brave the (fall)risk and get him up, anyway.
Nice...
Instead of a bedpan, I should use a commode.
*sigh*
Ok....
So, this morning's test --> 84. I think that I can pull my avg up with our ATI (weed-out) testing.
Anyway -- the class overchievers were in the hallway having heart palpitations.
Yes, we will whine about our 'B's...*laugh*
Although...we all understand that we'll be thankful for those 'B's next semester...when we get to Med/Surg and Pharm, that is.
The class ahead of us? Half are failing.
Our instructor's already predicted (today) that we'll lose about 10 before we finish next semester.
How's that for a vote of confidence....?
*laugh*
My undergrad (double major Neuroscience and Religion) is a 2.81. I have a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology (3.81). After prerequisite course work my undergraduate GPA rose to a 2.99. Many nursing schools do not consider graduate course work when evaluating applications. Obviously, this was extremely frustrating to me considering my vast improvement demonstrated in graduate school. I was accepted at the first three out of four schools I applied to...great schools with great reputations. I do know I was looked at as an entire package deal. All private schools.

I had a 3.2, but, I know some people that got in with a 2.7 or lower. The cut off for my school was a 2.5.
