Got in to an RN Program...now the Dilemmas

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Whats up everyone? I just got in a nursing program but have alot of financial responsibilities. i need to work and go to school so i know its going to be tough. i have other financial responsibilities like car, mortgage, old student loans, and etc.

my work doesnt allow night time or part time work. what i got a month and a half to prepare or deny the acceptance.

What to do? maybe wait for next semester...=(

Well, as a student you can notify your loan holders and defer the loans until you are back out of school.

Like you, I have financial responsibilities as well. Worse, for me, is that I will be laid off at the end of Jan and the market looks real bad right now. I could find another job in another city and/or state, but that is impractical....bad housing market to sell, DD half way through HS, NS's with wait lists or different admit criteria....

I will continue to look for a job in this city and in the meantime, my adult children in college will live at home and we will pool our SL resources to pay the bills. I only mention my situation because, like me, you can look for another job. Get one that allows you to complete NS. I had every intention of working FT until I reached 4th semester..... Only time will tell now.

You can do this.

Is Nursing what you really want to do? Do you make a decent salary at your job? I asked this because if the answer is yes and no, I would accept the nursing school program:

1. Call SL lenders and defer loans so that is one payment that you don't have to worry about

2. I'm assuming that the the NS program has an evening/weekend program

If so, just put your nose to the grind, perhaps get another SL to help you cover some of your bills and work hard at it.

If it is a private school, perhaps you may want to defer and save up smoe money.

Tood luck.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I just came home from Christmas from my uncles. 4 of the family members are nurses and the consensus of the party is yes! go for it! but so many factors play in this decision. high risk for me.

yes i do make a pretty good salary, but i cant see myself being an systems administrator (IT Dept) for the rest of my life. i need fulfillment in my career and IT is not doing it.

I want to work in oncology or pediatrics. Oncology for the personal reasons or pediatrics because children are great!

Maybe borrowing more money will be the final choice for me. I already owe a good amount from my other degree, i just want to minimize my loans!

So yeah im in a bind! I have to make a pros and cons list. I know nursing school is worth it!

Specializes in ER/Ortho.

I feel I need to reply because I too have a desire to work in pediatrics or oncology, maybe even pediatric oncology. It's have yet to find anyone who wants to work in oncology like me. Anyway, I am already in a program, and I had similar issues. My program does not offer night or weekend hours, and the requirments are such that our only day off is Sat, and the amount of hours is overwhelming. I ended up moving back home with kids in tow in order to be able to make it workable. I get loans, grants, and everything I can. I pay for all of my bills and food except rent/electricity/water is free. It's also nice because my mom can help out with the kids if needed. It was a tough decision, but in the end it will be worth it for all of us. If its something you want you will find a way, and its not forever. You can do this !!!!!!
