My goal when I became a nurse was to be out of bedside in 5 years. 5 years came (I was an ICU nurse) and I got a management position. Hated it and got let go for not signing some agreement. Place was beyond corrupt and i was beyond stressed even though I was making good money. Had unemployment for 5 months (oh, how I loved that) but had to go back to work and took a position I knew wasn't right for me because I needed a paycheck. No patient care, doing outcomes, being in front of a computer for most of the day, no patient interaction.
So I had a home hospice interview/shawdowing today. I loved it. It felt good to just interact with those patients even shadowing. To use my assessment skills which I thought were gone forever.
Yes, I am taking a pay cut. But the quality of life and job satisfaction is so worth it. Not to add, I have a young child starting kindergarten in September, and the over an hour commute each way wasn't cutting it anymore. This place is flexible and family oriented.
Quality of life all the way!!
Who knew my heart would be at the bedside.
Just want to share.

It's kind of healing when we finally find our niche. I have been a nurse for 33 years and I have held many positions but the moment it strayed too far for the bedside, I would find myself so unhappy and quickly return to my patients where I have always been most happy.
Good for you, Good Luck!!!

I think that you are right to follow your heart, I too am considering a move out of management and back to bedside nursing-being a manager is killing me and I have aged in the 2 years I have been doing it

unquestionably, one can't compare bedside nursing and the satisfaction that it brings in one sentence. admittedly, i have been away from beside nursing for awhile, and it's for this reason that i'm thinking of doing some moonlighting, like i use to so many moons ago. wishing you the very best in all of your future endeavors...aloha~

BTDT. When I find myself sitting in countless meetings, I only think of sitting next to a pt's bed instead, giving education. THAT is my Nirvana in nursing.
